San Francisco has one of the oldest BJJ scenes in the United States. Gracie lineages put down roots here in the 1990s, and the city now has more options per square mile than most comparable metros. The problem is sorting them. We pulled every gym-specific mention from Reddit threads about SF BJJ and matched the results against our gym directory.

Magalit BJJ
Magalit is the clearest Reddit consensus pick for no-gi training in San Francisco. Multiple threads that asked specifically about no-gi in SF named it first.
“Magalit BJJ and Denny Prokopos Jiujitsu are the places that are mainly NoGi oriented. Ralph Gracie SF offers some classes as well. If you have a car, driving south of San Francisco towards the peninsula, there’s 10th Planet Daly City.”
The training environment skews toward serious competitors:
“If you just mean the city of SF, then I’d recommend Magalit BJJ. It’s a heavy nogi school. There’s not a ton of space to wrestle, but that’s true of basically every gym in SF (real estate gets expensive per sq foot). They are a serious competition team. They compete constantly and always do well. The jiu jitsu there is just top notch. And Travis has unreal skills, but is great at conveying instruction in a way that anyone can understand.”
No-gi runs most nights:

Empire Jiu Jitsu
Empire is consistently named when people ask for competitive training in SF. It sits a few blocks from Magalit on Mission Street, and it came up in the original “best BJJ spots in SF” thread multiple times.
“Empire is fantastic - no place has a steam room or sauna”
“IMO the best options are Ralph Gracie in Berkeley, Empire in San Francisco, or Black Sheep in San Rafael. You will get really competitive Purple Belt rolls at any of those academies”
The directory tags flag it as high-level, beginner friendly, and drop-in, but also list expensive, overcrowded, and disorganized as community negatives. Worth knowing before you make the drive.

Ralph Gracie Jiu Jitsu
The main Ralph Gracie location at 1166 Howard Street holds a directory rating of 65 and confirms gi, no-gi, drop-in, and showers. Reddit knows it for hard rolls:
“Ralph Gracie jiu-jitsu San Francisco. Lots of hard rolls.”
Reddit also has persistent negative discussion about Ralph Gracie himself. One 2020 thread surfaced allegations of sexist and homophobic language toward students, alongside the widely-discussed incident in which he allegedly assaulted a competitor at a BJJ tournament before returning to Brazil:
“In San Francisco, all the traditional jiu jitsu schools are Ralph affiliates or taught by Ralph guys. Everything I hear about him though sounds terrible. Heard he is sexist towards female students and uses a ton of homophobic language (not the best move in San Fran). Last I heard he cheap shotted someone at a bjj tournament and ran back to Brazil.”

Alliance SF appeared alongside Empire and Ralph Gracie when a redditor asked for a shortlist in the same 2020 “best spots” thread:
“Do you know which neighborhood you are working / living in? That makes a difference. Bay Jiu Jitsu, Ralph’s, Empire, and Alliance are all worth checking out.”
The directory shows high-level and beginner-friendly on the positive side, with poor instructors, unfriendly, and disorganized as community negatives - the same split that appears for Empire. No single Reddit thread in the data breaks this down further.

Visiting and need drop-in: Empire Jiu Jitsu or Ralph Gracie SF (Howard St) both confirm drop-in and came up in Reddit threads for competitive rolling. Empire gets warmer overall community sentiment.
No-gi first: Magalit BJJ has the only Reddit consensus specifically for no-gi in the city. If you are willing to drive south, 10th Planet Daly City also confirms gi and no-gi with drop-in and tags as affordable.
