First off, this sounds like a red flag like a Gracie Barra or Gracie combative crap. Bjj in general is more expensive as a lot of instructors try to do this full time and or rent the building instead of renting mat space. Cost will depend on what you're getting and where you're at. I've paid as little as $75 a month for access to 6 classes a week plus open mat, nothing much there but a room with mats. I've seen 125+ a month but with access to more classes, more space and a variety of instructors. This is in a low COL area, go to San Francisco and I am sure that changes a ton. That's a pretty normal price around the San Francisco Bay Area in California, US. My gym offers unlimited classes in Muay Thai, Boxing, and Jiu-Jitsu for that price. I sometimes do about 7-10 classes/week at my gym. That usually means going 5-6 days a week and doing some double classes of padwork + sparring or boxing + muay thai. In terms of equipment, I just have a lot of wraps & workout clothes and have to wash them about 2x per week. I have two pairs of gloves that I use. I lived in Edinburgh and Berlin and now live in the Bay Area. A few thoughts on the US Europe comparisons. The US is a very inequitable society but there is no denying that if you make good money here, quality of life is very high. As soon as I arrived from Germany I went to the dentist and the dentistry is literally 25 years ahead here, as is most of the rest of the health care. There are also these idea that Americans have so few vacation days and work such long hours. I am sure many do. But not, in my experience, data scientists in San Francisco. For a big city with awesome culture and diversity and plenty of things to do I would personally recommend San Francisco. I spent 2 summers in Berkeley right across the bay from there & loved it. There's so many activities and ways to get involved it's really easy to make new friends if you have good hobbies. I did improv comedy and brazilian jiu Jitsu, went to poetry slams while I was there. Really anywhere in the Bay Area is hard to go wrong. Everyone is super chill and laid back. Really depends on how COVID is progressing in your local area. I keep an eye on our new daily case counts and we (here in San Francisco) are still at [75 new daily cases](https://data.sfgov.org/stories/s/COVID-19-Cases-and-Deaths/dak2-gvuj/) as of this writing. While that’s better than we’ve been the past few weeks, it is still much higher than the 20-30 cases/day we had March-May. Needless to say Kurt’s gym here is still completely closed until further notice. San Francisco has a strong MMA community. MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and we not only have local MMA schools in the area but there are fights every few months at Kezar and there's even a pro shop in the Outer Mission. There's also Boxing, Judo, Muay Thai, Jiu-jitsu and other schools that are connected to the MMA scene. You should cover that. source, 2019 ↗
