Meh. The US and the west has had a love affair with the foreign and exotic beauty of Japan for a very long time, but I think Asia was considered a lot less accessible in the past. Flights get cheaper and internationalization makes travel feel easier as the years go by. My brother just did an Asia trip in general; he also visited China, Singapore, mongolia, and Russia. He later did an African trip. I lived in the Middle East and have spent a lot of time in Europe and Latin America. In early 2000s, I was based in Asia. BJJ scene looked like how it was in the US back in the late 90s. Every school was kinda weird. My first school was in the living room of a condo in Singapore where the coach is a blue belt. His mom and other elderly family members would come in and out of the living room where a bunch of guys in various clothing (gi, shorts, army pants, etc.) are murdering each other without technique for hours every week.
