John is probably the biggest example of this but there is an ever increasing number of competent coaches who have little to no competition experience. Firas, Glick, Souders, Dima, etc… none of these people have major titles to their names but have built massive brands and audiences due to their ability to convey information. Competition success/experience does not correlate to being a good coach. I live in Austin and despite the presence of New Wave, B team, six blades and 10p plenty of small gyms with no name coaches have survived because quite frankly jiu jitsu is a niche sport that even source, 2025 ↗

Yeah I watched Lex's ascent, or descent, in real time. Lex had "The AI Podcast" so Rogan had him on as a generic "AI expert". He and Joe hit it off, Lex returned for repeated appearances, they bro'd over BJJ, Joe gave Lex his fancy watch, they hung at at clubs together, Lex moved to Austin, Lex renamed his podcast from "The AI Podcast" to the general "The Lex Fridman Podcast" and fashioned it after JRE with long-form random guest interviews and even stole Joe's "we do all commercials at the beginning of the podcast to not interrupt the flow" which was Joe's thing before moving to Spotify w source, 2025 ↗

I have doubts about how bad that really is because an MCL injury would completely immobilize you. He probably took shots and was fine. He was wrestling lol. That doesn't change the stopping power of Gane and Francis. Francis also has virtually no wrestling. The reason I reference Gane is because Aspinall will likely be a repeat of that: taken down by a better wrestler. Gane was absolute manhandled. Tom's BJJ brown belt championship won't help him win shit. His dad being a BJJ practitioner doesn't make him "primarily a grappler." Where was this in the Austin fight? I don't think many Jiu Jitsu techniques have been picked up for regular use in wrestling - just on occasion is all I mean. I posted the other day, a small clip of Austin DeSanto, hitting a Kimura (for example) after a crazy cartwheel entry into stocks/crucifix. I think the flow of info between Jiu Jutsu and wrestling is quite assymetric. Lot's of wrestling coming into BJJ.. less so the other way around. But more wrestlers are dabbling in BJJ now - which is awesome for the Jiu Jitsu landscape. Not necessarily an uncommon hobby, but one that might be relevant for this list: Austin has become a nice hub for some quality Brazilian jiu jitsu.
