Holy smokes. I was in my first year of college, and living in the dorms when the first Austin Powers movie came out in 1997. I was also on my college’s judo team and did BJJ several nights a week and the number of “judo chop!!!” comments I would get coming or going to practices was insane. source, 2025 ↗

Depends on your target audience. You won't get a lot of kids signed up to a gym with killer in the name. Which might be exactly what you want, even though it will be a lot harder to pay the bills. If you are only teaching BJJ, I'd stick with calling it Grappling or Jiu Jitsu over Combat. That sounds much more MMA to me. I wouldn't use your last name, unless it's Gracie. The standard is just the town or area with the art or style. It lets people know what they are getting. You can still have a cool mascot or symbol to personalize it, or a cooler name for your competition team or something source, 2025 ↗

My son is a fellow Texas 5A and we have been doing bjj a long time! Texas has a ton of great bjj gyms and there is even a pretty decent pro bjj scene in Austin now. Wrestling will for sure give you a leg up! source, 2025 ↗

Goldberg is a case of pushing someone so hard without letting him really work and learn. I want to see the timeline where he regularly did longer matches that allowed him to become a better worker instead of mostly squashes. It wouldn't fit his gimmick of being a destroyer who only had 8-10+ min matches vs the biggest names possible only on PPVs, but I'm curious so see what his earlier MMA skills (he practices muay-thai, jiu-jitsu and some judo iirc since the early 90s) would have developed along some better wrestling match psychology and pacing. He had many more moves than people remember a source, 2024 ↗

They have the large events: worlds, pans, masters worlds, even kids pans. But not all local opens. The only one I see coming on their schedule is the Orlando Open. source, 2021 ↗

As a single male, I would challenge your last point simply b/c, "WTF is/are your ear(s)." As for your approach, I'm sure as long as your can find an academy that fits your perspective, especially in Austin. What I would personally say, don't focus so much on the idea of pressure, outside of totally advantageous positions. I'm talking about things like being on top in a full guard. Those are wrestler tendencies, and gauging that you're ex-.mil means that you were talk GRACIE COMBATIVES, which are no longer practical, but the contractual agreement was signed. Good luck finding a school, I'm source, 2017 ↗
