Holy smokes. I was in my first year of college, and living in the dorms when the first Austin Powers movie came out in 1997. I was also on my college’s judo team and did BJJ several nights a week and the number of “judo chop!!!” comments I would get coming or going to practices was insane. source, 2025 ↗

I’d assume you’re either in San Diego or Austin, having that many expensive world class gyms around isn’t common lol. Honestly as someone also with a TKD-Boxing background (12 and 5 years) BJJ clicked for me and became very addictive very fast. That being said, those are outlandish prices and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing judo. If you want to transition to BJJ down the road, having a judo skill set is a large advantage and will lessen the initial learning curve. source, 2025 ↗

I’m a 45 year old wrestler who started BJJ at 39 and then Judo at 43 years old. I have a lot of previous injuries from many years of wrestling. College wrestling wrecked me, but I stayed moving and coached highschool kids for 20+ years before going to BJJ. Do what you want to do. There is this idea in BJJ that you can’t wrestle at an old age. I was still wrestling with D3 guys who came to my BJJ school a few years ago and wrestle with the MMA club at the university, which always has a number of good wrestlers. If you have a good stance, then you can do a lot as an old guy. You don’t need to h source, 2025 ↗

Awesome! I think honestly Undertaker probably would’ve won it, at least if it was set up more like MMA. Kurt Angle has said Taker knows actual submission holds, he seems to have boxed as a teen and done BJJ rolls, he’s legit huge and athletic, Austin has said Taker used Japanese holds (I’m guessing maybe Judo) to stretch him for real, and Tracy Smothers and Bruce Prichard have talked about him laying out people in bar fights. Also, when he was 44 and past his physical prime, he got lit on fire and still did a full match, with people hitting him in his burnt spots. He’s my favorite wrestler, an source, 2025 ↗

It’s becoming bigger in BJJ but is still new and niche as a result. On the west coast you have Legion with Jflo who integrates the holy trinity of grappling well (judo, wrestling, nogi bjj). In Illinois you have Daisy Fresh with a mix of high level bjj and wrestling guys. In Austin B Team and New Wave are big into bjj/wrestling combo. In terms of tournaments the only one I know is CJI last year that rewarded the standing position over guard. Jflo has mentioned he’d be interested in a tournament/style that rewarded the standing game and top position. Overall though it’s pretty rare to hav source, 2025 ↗

Goldberg is a case of pushing someone so hard without letting him really work and learn. I want to see the timeline where he regularly did longer matches that allowed him to become a better worker instead of mostly squashes. It wouldn't fit his gimmick of being a destroyer who only had 8-10+ min matches vs the biggest names possible only on PPVs, but I'm curious so see what his earlier MMA skills (he practices muay-thai, jiu-jitsu and some judo iirc since the early 90s) would have developed along some better wrestling match psychology and pacing. He had many more moves than people remember a source, 2024 ↗

I mean, im no doctor but I also would never go to one for cali lol. Its prob cultural, i think its less common in Judo. In BJJ your damn coach prob has syringes behind the desk. You can get one at the pet store or on Amazon. You need to use the fat gauge needles like 21g. You can maybe use a 25g but it might get clogged depending on how coagulated you let it get. I don't know anyone who went to the Dr for cali but Im in Austin. source, 2024 ↗

You've trained with women as well I assume? If so, surely you've noticed the difference in capabilities? I've been training for around two years on and off, and in my first month I was able to lock down an armbar by just brute force against our instructor. In randori mind you. She's an awesome lady, with a brown belt in Judo and black in BJJ, who's way, way, beyond me in terms of technique and knowledge. But biology is biology man. A woman has to work significantly harder to reach the same physical level as a dude. Now, if you have a guy who looks like the fat bastard from Austin Powers, sure. source, 2024 ↗
