In the 1950's Mario's father and uncle trained under Ogawa who started Brazil's first Judo school nearly 80 years ago with Mitsuyo Maeda (who is credited with bringing Judo to Brazil from Japan). His uncle was an Olympic Judo referee for nearly 30 years and his brother won the Brazilian national championship, the Pan Am championship, and went on to be an Olympian in Judo.
