Barcelona BJJ Gyms: What Reddit Actually Says

Most “BJJ Barcelona” Reddit threads converge on the same three or four names. One gym has been recommended in nearly every drop-in thread since 2017. One collects two years of pricing complaints. One sits at the top of the Spain BJJ Tour medal table and at the center of two Reddit accounts alleging extortion.

Aranha BJJ: Most Consistently Recommended

No Barcelona gym appears in more “where to train” threads, and almost always in positive terms. The recommendations span 2017 to 2024 and come from independent posters across multiple subreddits.

One commenter also confirmed Aranha accepted drop-ins when 10th Planet reportedly did not. On the Spain BJJ Tour 25/26, Aranha Hospitalet fielded the largest team in the Barcelona area - 65 athletes, 16 golds, 21 silvers, 20 bronzes, with a 66-91 win/loss record.

ATOS BCN: One Detailed Drop-In Review

ATOS BCN drew one of the more specific first-person accounts in r/bjj threads about Barcelona:

“I dropped into ATOS BCN last night and it was excellent. I done the beginners class at 1830 and it was very very beginner (10 white belts and me, a blue belt). Big warmup, drilled a double unders pass then some armbars from mount, then a tiny bit of positional sparring at the end… The coach encouraged me to stay for the later class (1945-2130) which was fine by me but damn it was hard work and I was struggling to give them much by the end, but it was great fun; everyone very respe[ctful]…” - r/bjj, September 2021

Gullo BJJ: Small School, Good Jiu-Jitsu

Acadèmia Barcelona Jiu-Jitsu: Friendly, High Standard

“I’ve trained at Acadèmia Barcelona Jiu-Jitsu a couple of times, and they were always such a friendly bunch of people with a high standard of skill. I’d definitely recommend dropping in.” - r/bjj, January 2024

10th Planet Barcelona: No-Gi Only, Check Before You Visit

Two comments from late 2023 and early 2024 point in different directions on drop-ins:

Anaconda BJJ: Two Independent Pricing Complaints

Anaconda appears in several recommendation lists and the gym’s owner gained attention for intervening in a street robbery. But two independent commenters, two years apart on different subreddits, flag the same problem:

“All i know is one club that you should absolutely avoid which is the Anaconda BJJ club since they are known for ‘scamming’ you with hidden fees that they add last second when paying.” - r/Barcelona, October 2022

TEMPLUM BCN: Top Competition Results, Serious Reddit Allegations

This is where community reputation and competition performance diverge most sharply.

On the Spain BJJ Tour 25/26, Templum BCN won 7 golds from 9 athletes, with a best rank of 1. That is the highest gold-per-athlete ratio of any named Barcelona gym in the data.

On Reddit, two accounts posted one week apart in June 2024 on r/bjj describe serious misconduct by named instructors:

“yeah I once had this ‘bjj world champion’ ask me for a bribe in his gym (templum in barcelona). Kept telling me how ‘everyone here is a family’. We made eye contact once on the street and he looked to the floor. His gym also offered me a coaching spot and a black belt. When I declined, they bought in some people at a 30kg differential specifically meant to injure me. I was also harassed in barcelona multiple times after leaving the gym, they’re literally a gang…” - r/bjj, June 2024

“Jonas Andrade and Andres Rodrigues from templum in Barcelona tried to extort me. I literally subbed someone once and Andres Rodrigues said ‘Hey I want a pair of shoes’. I declined, right after that I started getting mismatched at +30kg differential. Jonas Andrade kept telling me bjj is ‘a family’ and I need to be ‘a contributing member of the family’. These are unverified Reddit claims. Two independent, specific accounts posted within a week of each other are a different signal than a single anonymous complaint. A 2020 comment offered a different picture: “I haven’t trained at Templum, but I know a guy who went to teach kickboxing there and he seems to love it.” - r/Barcelona, August 2020

Cicero Costha Europe leads on total golds with 17 from 38 athletes. Redbelt academia is the most efficient entry: 10 golds and a 29-8 record from just 6 athletes. Neither gym features prominently in Reddit’s Barcelona BJJ discussions, which points to a gap between what the community talks about and what the data shows.

Who Reddit Doesn’t Cover

Several of the strongest competition programs in the data - Cicero Costha Europe, Redbelt academia, HUMBLING JIU JITSU CLUB, HWC TEAM - have no meaningful Reddit footprint in Barcelona-specific threads. If competition results matter to you, those names are worth investigating beyond what Reddit can offer.
