Austin Has a Lot to Say About BJJ

No other city generates this much BJJ chatter on Reddit. The baseline take is consistent:

“Austin must be the fastest growing BJJ community in the states. I was just there - it’s crazy. I live and train in NorCal where it’s very busy, but Austin is the leveled up.” source

“There’s a great jiu jitsu gym every block in Austin, it’s like Starbucks around here, try out a few and see what you like, can’t really go wrong.” source

“Dude, you’re in the no-gi capital of the world.” source

The question is whether the hype maps to the competition record. Below is every gym Reddit named directly, checked against IBJJF and ADCC event data.

Competition Footprint

The two Austin gyms with the most results in the bjjgym.com dataset:

GymEvents enteredTotal results
Renzo Gracie Austin57150
Kingsway Jiu Jitsu3366

Medal breakdowns per event are not available in this dataset. What the totals show is sustained competition participation across multiple years and venues.

RGA’s 57 events span Austin, Dallas, Houston, Denver, New York, Pan, Worlds, and World Master events from 2022 to 2026. Kingsway’s 33 events include ADCC North American Trials 2025 (4 athletes), Pan No-Gi 2025 (6 athletes), and World No-Gi Championship 2025 (5 athletes). Those are top-flight events.

Renzo Gracie Austin

Reddit’s most-cited gym. The draw is the coaching lineup:

“Merigali and Danaher both teach at RGA and I think it was $150 for the week when I visited. I also recommend 10th Planet’s Open Mat.” source

“That weird little strip mall has one of the best BJJ gyms in the world in it! Fun fact. Renzo Gracie Austin.” source

“I have Brazilian Fight Factory (Tacketts), Renzo Gracie Austin (Danaher), and 3-4 other BJJ/MMA gyms within 6 miles of my house.” source

The community treats RGA as the place to train if you want access to the Danaher group. The 57-event competition log confirms it also puts athletes on the mat at volume - the two things reinforce each other.

New Wave

Reddit and the competition scene treat New Wave and RGA as the same destination. The most specific practitioner review of the training environment:

“John is the hardest worker I’ve seen in any domain, ever… on the mat teaching public and pro classes from 9am to 9pm daily with very little time in between. He is very charismatic and a 10/10 public instructor… I was a black belt when I got here with plenty of experience, and this is by far the best BJJ environment I’ve ever seen.” source

“When I spent a few months there, unlimited including John’s was only $210 iirc… some of the folks around were literally the best in the world.” source

A black belt with extensive experience calling it the best environment they’ve seen is not a throwaway line. It appears twice across independent threads.

B-Team

Consistently named alongside RGA and Fight Factory when visitors ask where to train:

“You could go to Austin which has B Team (Craig Jones et al), New Wave (Danaher), and other good schools, Fight Factory I think is where the Tacketts train?” source

“Some of the best BJJ competitors and coaches in the world are currently based in Austin. Craig Jones & Nick Rodriguez, Gordon Ryan and the rest of John Danaher’s squad. Top 1% type athletes.” source

Gordon Ryan’s new gym is also being tracked in threads:

“Gordon is opening a new gym in Austin Texas. His YouTube videos also seem to be moving more BJJ instructional content.” source

B-Team does not appear in the IBJJF dataset. Their competition is primarily in submission-only formats. The absence here is a format gap, not a competition gap.

Fight Factory Jiu Jitsu

Reddit places Fight Factory in the top tier for serious training:

“Fight Factory I think is where the Tacketts train? Or San Diego which is Andre Galvao’s Atos headquarters, or Costa Mesa near LA for Art of Jiu Jitsu (Mendes bros).” source

“I would love to be in that room watching him train with Andrew Tackett and Kody Steele.” source

It appears in the short list any Austin local gives to a traveling grappler:

“Dude, you’re in the no-gi capital of the world. Go to B-Team, Renzos (New Wave), and Fight Factory. If you’re looking for something with less of a comp vibe, VOW and East Austin Jiu Jitsu Parlor are both great local clubs to check out.” source

Fight Factory does not appear in the IBJJF dataset, consistent with a no-gi/sub-only competition focus.

Kingsway Jiu Jitsu

This is where the data diverges from the noise. Reddit barely mentions Kingsway by name. The IBJJF and ADCC data shows a gym competing at the highest levels: 66 results at 33 events, including the ADCC North American Trials 2025, Pan No-Gi 2025, and the World No-Gi Championship 2025.

If your measure for “best BJJ gym in Austin” is competition production at elite events, Kingsway belongs in the conversation. The gap between their Reddit footprint and their competition footprint is the sharpest in this dataset.

VOW BJJ

VOW appears in almost every thread about Austin BJJ culture, women’s training, or military and veteran access:

“I second VOW. Ryan, the owner, is incredibly technical but brings a laid-back attitude to his gym. There are a lot of women even at the open mats on Sunday. I’m recently back to Austin and rejoining BJJ after a 4-year hiatus and the whole crew has been amazing and welcoming.” source

“Military woman here. I live in the Austin area and there is so much BJJ here. VOW and 10th Planet might be worth a look, both have a high female population.” source

“VOW vet class is free.” source

VOW does not appear in the competition dataset. It’s the gym Austin locals name when the question is about environment, not medals.

10th Planet Austin

Positive mentions for the women’s program and military pricing are consistent:

“10th Planet Austin has a great women’s jiu jitsu program. Mon/Wed/Thurs at 5:30pm & Tues/Fri at 11am.” source

“If you prefer no-gi, I think 10th Planet ATX has even better pricing for military/first responders.” source

One negative mention exists: a 2021 Eddie Bravo seminar at 10th Planet Austin drew a sharp complaint - directed at the visiting instructor, not the gym:

“Went to an Eddie Bravo seminar in Austin 10P in 2021, only had been training for 8 months… Eddie was such a dick to me, I asked him about a certain detail and got pissed off, said ‘can you not comprehend what I’m saying?’ in such a dick way… Worst seminar I’ve gone to.” source

Six Blades / The Flow Institute (Lake Travis)

Victor Hugo teaches here. Reddit’s direct mention is brief:

“Train with Victor Hugo at Six Blades in Lakeway.” source

Six Blades appears at ADCC Amateur World Championship 2024 in the competition dataset - the only Austin-area gym in this dataset to show at that event. An Austin local counts them among the gyms that define the city’s scene:

“I live in Austin and despite the presence of New Wave, B Team, Six Blades and 10P, plenty of small gyms with no-name coaches have survived because quite frankly jiu jitsu is a niche sport.” source

Austin Submission Fighting

The only gym that surfaces specifically in catch wrestling searches for Austin:

“Austin Submission Fighting. Brian teaches BJJ and his own style which he calls Modified Shooto. His Modified Shooto is pretty much Catch combined with Muay Thai. His CATCH training comes from Bart Vale who was trained under Karl Gotch, Minoru Suzuki, Funaki and Fujiwara.” source

Not a sport BJJ gym. The only name that appears when someone is specifically searching for catch wrestling instruction in Austin.

The clearest gap in the dataset: Kingsway is competing at ADCC trials and World No-Gi while barely registering in community discussions. That is worth knowing if competition production matters more to you than online consensus.
