I was travelling in Melbourne and wanted to get some training in while I was there. I asked the guys at the MMA store what would be a good gym to drop in to. They told me Absolute MMA was good, so I headed over there. I was kind of clueless at the time about drop in etiquette. My home gym was open 24/7 with classes on frequently throughout the day and people were always there rolling or sparring, I assumed all gyms would be the same. I packed up all my gear and got on the train and then had a very long walk to Absolute. There was a heat wave at the time and I was suffering terribly in the he source, 2024 ↗

Depends a bit on where you live and what you want. When you're starting out any gym will be fine. As you get better there might be a teaching style or group of people you prefer and at that point you can move gyms if you want. Absolute MMA St Kilda is likely the most famous gym in Melbourne. Absolute has a good introduction program that will get you started with jiu jitsu before you start doing the bigger classes. Immersion has a good competition team and great instruction. Put a few more details into your post and you'll get better responses. source, 2019 ↗

Hey Lachy, I'm a purple belt from New Zealand, was a pleasure to visit Absolute last year during Pan Ams. I'm hoping you can share your thoughts and advice regarding improving to a high level and being up to date with modern jiu jitsu without being formally taught those things, due to the isolation of the gym from the modern scene. I know in this day and age, there's so much more quality material online so the barriers are much less than even 5 years ago, but I still find it hard to stay on top of things. I'm fascinated by BJJ practitioners such as yourself, Craig, Kit, Levi, Espen, and To source, 2019 ↗
