I hear you, I’m the same and when I moved country I had to make a serious effort to build a friendship network. I can’t recommend joining a Brazilian jiu-jitsu club enough. A completely different culture than other clubs or gyms, you’ll have solid friends in a few months and you’ll also learn a fun and rewarding skill set. It’s fucking hard but it’s worth it and they’re are some excellent ones around Dublin. If BJJ isn’t for you, it’s not for everyone a good CrossFit gym is usually super friendly and more community focused compared to a regular gym source, 2024 ↗

https://www.gracieohio.com is sort of the mothership for Ohio BJJ with roots back in the 90s. It’s run by Robin Gieseler who is a good dude. I haven’t lived in Columbus since 2015, so it’s been a while. But… it’s one of the oldest Relson Gracie gyms in the country. A lot of history there. When I left, a lot of guys were also going to https://supersystembjj.com which was started by BJ Nelson, also a good dude. It’s in Dublin. He was a blue belt when I was a blue belt at Robins school. I dropped in at Jungle BJJ and they were really lovely there. I felt very welcome and the rolls were great. They also have Tom Halpin (ADCC trials winner, he won CJJ worlds also) teaching nogi a couple times a week. I have also competed against people from SBG and East Coast, and been invited to drop in, but I haven't had the chance yet. They've got awesome jiu jitsu and they seem super lovely. I'm 46 and just recently got my black belt. 6 years ago I had a horrible set of surgeries that put me in the ICU for 4 months and out of commission for 4 years during which I couldn't train at all. Last year I got my cornea sliced, my MCL torn, my metatarsal dislocated, and my body aches a lot. Still, I made it a point to push myself harder. I did the super intense R1NG BJJ World Camp and then competed at the regular Gi Worlds at adult and almost beat a 23 year old athletic Brazilian athlete.
