What Reddit says about Jiu-Jitsu Social
7 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.
Memberships! Gym, climbing, jiu-jitsu, a rec sports league. Forest city social has tons of sports, pretty cheap to play, you could play say soccer every Wednesday night all summer for like $120. Otherwise, great parks in London, check out Springbank, Fanshawe Conservation area, Westminster ponds... Always nice to go for a walk or get outside if the weather is half decent. source, 2025 ↗

Just a note at the start that Krav Maga is neither traditional nor Asian, it was created in Israel in living memory. Moving on to the meat of your question, the answer is complex and has elements of politics, pop culture, and social change. (Caveat: this applies principally to the Anglosphere, especially the UK and US) It all goes back to the late 19th century. At this time, a man who wanted to learn self-defense would normally take up pugilism, and/or learn the use of a cane if he was a gentleman. A woman who wanted to learn self-defense was out of luck. This changed in 1898, when Edwar source, 2025 ↗

Like everyone says here, if they are starting young families you will likely hardly ever see them unless they are living close to you with kids the same age as yours. Go and try a bjj gym. The tons of them in London and its a great way to scratch the social itch source, 2025 ↗

the grass is always greener on the other side... I bet many of your friends living in Dublin or London sharing a flat wish they had your life. Don't compare yourself, you've got an arrangement that most would love to have but never managed. If things are going well at work, you are learning and progressing in your career then great! I'd suggest spending a few weeks here and there working from Dublin or London if you can... just get an airbnb, work from there and socialise in the evenings... then go back home until the urge comes back again. You can actually have a much better quality of lif source, 2025 ↗

I'm sorry about your situation - I have many advantages you do not and my mental health is still poor. So kudos to you for being so resilient. You write quite beautifully, cogently. What about journalism or writing some pieces online on Quora, Medium etc and think about getting into that? Not as your main job as it's precarious but just something to do/side hustle. Have you considered getting physically fit, or picking up a martial art? Things like BJJ or boxing always come with a community. Platonic friendships being hypergamous is so socially astute! I think you can increase your hypergamy source, 2024 ↗

We moved from Brighton to BH a decade or so ago, mostly because we could get a lot more house for the same money. I needed to be able to get to Brighton and London for work, and we both go to Lewes for family stuff. BH stations get you to all those places easily. It suffers from being a heavy commuter town. A lot of people sleep here, but work and socialise elsewhere. So there's not a lot going on. For events, great pubs, nights out, you might end up having to go to Brighton etc. Bit of a vicious cycle for the town, but there we go. Outside of BH, there's some lovely country pubs, and the wa source, 2024 ↗

I am a bit older than most people on this sub (24) but my current friends consist of - Old University friends, Old School Friends, People I train Jiu Jitsu/MMA with, Video Game friends from Discord, Anime friends I met through Meet Up in london (one piece) & various other things. The best thing is to just do stuff. Social media is killing our youth I swear. Trying to find girls through tinder ALL day, doom scrolling Instagram and Tiktok, no more youth centres to hang out with people. Find hobbies that you think you’ll like, whether that’s martial arts, anime club, football, rugby, art clu source, 2024 ↗
