When I was at a 3mon holiday mma/bjj training in Tokyo, I was stopped by 2 cops after a night out with friends. I was ready to give up everything and snitch on anyone!, I don't know who in particular but I was ready to give up anyone! Turns out they were just asking me if I needed help with my 2 then very drunk female Japanese friends. They saw me struggling hauling and chasing 2 idiots around to get a cab. I am so traumatized by US cops that I thought I automatically did something wrong. I found out a lot about myself that night. I’m gonna get a lot of flak here, but the honest answer is because Shotokan has nothing to teach that another style can’t do better. Martial arts, first and foremost, is the skill of fighting, hence the name. If you want self-improvement, you can go to church, read a self-help book, do community service, take up yoga, practice zen meditation, the whole shebang. But generally speaking, Shotokan is NOT an effective style in teaching how to fight.  Shotokan, even for the standards of a japanese martial art, is unbelievably dogmatic. On vacation in Tokyo. Decided to hit up a BJJ gym a few train stops away. I show up early and wait until a young Japanese guy comes to open the gym. He speaks almost no English, but he tells me he is a black belt in judo and has recently started to train BJJ here to transition to MMA. A blue belt shows up, an older blue belt. It is just us 3 and I basically get a judo private with this black belt. I have done enough judo to understand him with his limited English and watching the technique. We drill uchi mata and some sets ups for it, spar a few rounds of BJJ, and call it day. We take a pic an source, 2024 ↗

My last BJJ destination in Tokyo was perhaps my most meaningful and important one. ​ The term “Legend” is an often overused word in BJJ and MMA. However, Yuki Nakai is a true legend, and I was elated to meet him on my last night in Tokyo! Nakai burst onto the scenes in 1995 when he made it to the finals against Rickson Gracie in the Vale-Tudo Japan event (made famous in the documentary, Choke). Despite being the lightest fighter in the tournament, as well as being blinded in one eye (permanently) in his first round fight, Nakai showed the world his tremendous skills and heart by source, 2023 ↗

Grüezi EthFinance 😁 Been away in Japan 🇯🇵 the last 4.5-weeks or so for vacation. Didn't use the phone much, went camping, did jiu jitsu, was a cornerman for an MMA fighter, went to a baseball game, sumo; just reconnecting and seeing how the ecosystem is. * Japan just hosted the G7 Summit in Niigata 🇯🇵 where the topic of cryptographic commodities was brought up.
