Ehhh—I’d agree to disagree. I’ve been training jiu jitsu in the Los Angeles area for 20 years and I’d consider that high. source, 2023 ↗

Leverage your time with a skill or hobby that you love to do and find a way to monetize it. I believe in making more and working less… but one must still work ;) 😉 I own a company that teaches private one on one self defense training around all the high end areas of Los Angeles. We charge $300/hr-$700hr, I personally work 3-4 hrs a day Mon-Fri and have 3 of my instructors(whom used to be my students) go out and train 4-6 hrs a day Monday- Sunday. I made the DECISION that I didn’t want to work for someone else and we truly LOVE what we do. It never feels like “work” and our clientele is consi source, 2022 ↗

Man I wish I knew more of the gyms down there, but perhaps I can give you some suggestions on how to identify the gym for you: -A Jiu Jitsu gym that also offer a legit MMA program is likely NOT what you are looking for due to super high intensity and likelihood of injuries for you. -A gym that is very competitively focused usually have the same issue as an MMA gyms with the likelihood of injury due to intensity. -A gym that has a large age range of practitioners, male and female, and has clean bathrooms would be what I’d try and find if I were in your shoes. I’ve heard some Navy Seal podcast guy say that to really get optimal performance out of cops, you would need to train them like high-speed military people. They have training cycles and deployment cycles. So optimally, cops would train for three months, every day. Tactics, BJJ, shooting, deescalation, role-playing, law, all that shit. Then they’d work the street for three months. Then back to training and so on. This is essentially impossible given staffing levels, cost of training, cost of ammunition, risk of injury, and a million other reasons. People expect cops to shoot like Navy Se source, 2022 ↗

He'll be around for a while, Schaub doesn't have much else to resort to and he's already invested so much money into it, not to much he's accustomed himself to a lifestyle a lifestyle of upper class Los Angeles. Anything else wouldn't pay the bills he has to milk this for whatever he can. He could maybe be an assistant coach or coach a suburban bjj / mma gym, coach high school football, work security. He seems to be doing enough to draw a crowd to pay for bills and the sponsors seem to cover the Ferrari & house repayments, for now. I couldn't imagine he could keep this up for 10+ years, it source, 2022 ↗

To quote Joe Rogan when he is talking about black belt BJJ grapplers in the UFC, 'There is levels to this game'. You have a pretty serious hobby there, but your not doing it super frequently. That is comparable to having a Black Belt in Judo or BJJ, but not being able to beat the guys who regularly win regional tournaments. The kind of hike you describe is Serious fun. But for you that is a once a year thing. So you go on Serious Hikes on a semi casual basis. Even at a once a year basis, you do it regularly and I am guessing you plan your vacation time around it. And that you have spent source, 2022 ↗

It’s a lot easier when you know people in the city/area. I lived in Los Angeles for almost 6 years. But I am good at BJJ and knew a lot of people on the area through the sport. If I didn’t know anyone, I doubt I could have afforded to live there. It took a to figure out the costs too. Gas cost more but travel was shorter and mpg higher after I figured out the best times to drive, so the price per month was about the same for transportation. So many high quality food and other stores are available. Even the thrift and dollar stores are better in SoCal, so it can make up for the cost of living source, 2022 ↗
