What Reddit says about Gracie South Bay Jiu Jitsu

8 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.

Don’t really need to go to Brazil to train with worlds best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes, they are all literally in the American South West. Go to San Diego, Los Angeles, and the Phoenix area. source, 2025 ↗

I know Gracie university is different from Gracie Humaita and Gracie Barra. I don’t know which direction you were driving from but the.Gracie jiu-jitsu gym in San Diego, Gracie South Bay (it’s a Humaita) gym was a place. I really really enjoyed going one week when I was in town. I personally clicked with their instructors and really liked the classes. Just a thought. source, 2025 ↗

I grew up here, moved to San Diego and came back with a wife and young son. My wife is born and raised in socal. Positives There are decent places to get drinks, beer specifically but night life is not going to be the same as a city. Nature is obviously a big draw. You’re a couple hours from the Bay Area, which you can drive to if you miss a city. Since it’s a small place, you may see people frequently. I think it’s a great place to raise kids, if that’s something in the cards for you. Negatives If you’re big on Mexican food, it’s tough out here. Some places can scratch the itch but I’ve y source, 2025 ↗

The American model is very different from the rest of the developed world with exception of Canada. If you got to Europe for example there’s massive complexes or adjoining gyms. Often times general fitness on floor and boxing and mats on the other. You see it in alot of other places in the Bay Area and San Diego where rent is simply too high for bjj alone to be feasible. AKA, jocks gym come to mind off the top of my head. The boutique gyms will always be the exception like Caio Terra’s and atos. Every class gets packed there. I live near Boston and you see the same effect happening. Very diffi source, 2024 ↗

Why Canada? Not judging, but if you were to move solely for BJJ I’m surprised it wouldn’t be to a hotspot like San Diego or South Florida. source, 2024 ↗

When I was in elementary school I went to soccer camp each year run by the #1 US soccer team, the San Diego Soccers. They would play us at the end of each camp and completely crush us and I loved every minute of it. I was really good at defense, and basically could handle any kid my age but the Soccers could just cut through me like I wasn't there, it was amazing. Same thing as rolling with a last-name Gracie in BJJ when they're actually trying. It's night and day different from your usual roll or when they're going easy on you. source, 2024 ↗
