I know Gracie university is different from Gracie Humaita and Gracie Barra. I don’t know which direction you were driving from but the.Gracie jiu-jitsu gym in San Diego, Gracie South Bay (it’s a Humaita) gym was a place. I really really enjoyed going one week when I was in town. I personally clicked with their instructors and really liked the classes. Just a thought. source, 2025 ↗

The mountains between the valley and San Diego have nice hiking (sunrise highway area). It’s about 90 minutes from Palm Springs and about 3.5 from big Bear. I remember there was a BJJ gym in Brawley and I think it was free for law enforcement but don’t quote me on that. BP has CrossFit instructors and their sectors have free CrossFit for LEOs (at least it was when I was out there). In terms of overall life, it’s what you make of it. It’s a small town with small town positives and negatives. Every year it gets more and more stuff. Youre about 90 minutes from both San Diego and Palm Springs. C source, 2024 ↗

California is a huge state with lots of great Jiu Jitsu. Be sure you narrow down where you want to go. For example, from San Diego (Atos, Legion) to LA (Gracie Barra,10P HQ) is at least an hour and a half drive. Then there’s a bunch of training in the Bay Area. LA to SF is at least a 6 hour drive, but you get Ralph Gracie HQ. SF to San Jose is around an hour, but that takes you to Heroes Martial Arts with Gumby, or Guerrilla with Matt Darcy. Drive an hour inland to Pleasanton, and you get Dave Camarillo. Drive 2 hours from there to Sacramento and you get Marcos Torregosa and Cassio Werneck. source, 2024 ↗

Specifically in West Mission Valley, you probably won’t have much luck. However, there are plenty of quality martial arts schools near your neighborhood and San Diego in general. Depends on what you’re looking for, but here are some recommendations. BJJ - The top two would be Atos HQ or Legion AJJ IMO. There are plenty of other quality BJJ schools in SD in general…it’s probably one of the top cities to train in the US. Judo - SD Judo and Jiu Jitsu is a new but quality choice. I tried out a class up there once and they were great, but couldn’t afford their prices on top of my BJJ membership. source, 2024 ↗

When I was in elementary school I went to soccer camp each year run by the #1 US soccer team, the San Diego Soccers. They would play us at the end of each camp and completely crush us and I loved every minute of it. I was really good at defense, and basically could handle any kid my age but the Soccers could just cut through me like I wasn't there, it was amazing. Same thing as rolling with a last-name Gracie in BJJ when they're actually trying. It's night and day different from your usual roll or when they're going easy on you. source, 2024 ↗

Try SDCA in spring valley. Everyone is nice and there are mostly beginners because the program is only a couple years old. They have muy thai, boxing, wrestling, and judo also source, 2022 ↗
