Depends what you’re looking for more, vacation to an exotic country or jiu jitsu training. You could go to Austin which has B team (Craig Jones et al) , New Wave (Danaher), and other good schools, Fight Factory I think is where the Tacketts train? Or San Diego which is Andre Galvao’s Atos headquarters, or Costa Mesa near LA for Art of Jiu Jitsu (Mendes bros). If you want mostly a cool vacation plus BJJ I would probably go Thailand or Bali. source, 2025 ↗

Military woman here. I live in the Austin area and there is so much BJJ here. VOW and 10th planet might be worth a look, both have a high female population and 10P does free for military classes 3 times a week (usually small tho). Atos HQ in San Diego has a ton of high level female competitors. source, 2025 ↗

Was in San Diego recently, gotta roll in with a friend of a friend who goes to Legion. Dude has nothing but good things to say bout em n the program. He’s been trainin 12 years off/on (classic “life happens”) so I trust him I personally am an ATOS member (not ATOS SD, jus visited HQ there) and love our no bullshit, straight to the point BJJ but I get not wantin to pay out the wazoo for em source, 2024 ↗

The American model is very different from the rest of the developed world with exception of Canada. If you got to Europe for example there’s massive complexes or adjoining gyms. Often times general fitness on floor and boxing and mats on the other. You see it in alot of other places in the Bay Area and San Diego where rent is simply too high for bjj alone to be feasible. AKA, jocks gym come to mind off the top of my head. The boutique gyms will always be the exception like Caio Terra’s and atos. Every class gets packed there. I live near Boston and you see the same effect happening. Very diffi source, 2024 ↗

Atos isn’t exactly hurting for students, all of their live streamed content makes it seem like their mats are usually full. Being that multiple world champions train there, I think the price point is trying to actively drive the randoms away. As you said, there is no lack of good bjj in San Diego, but not many have the pedigree of Atos. It’s obviously not hurting their business. source, 2024 ↗

I’ve been to a few classes at Victory MMA and thoroughly enjoyed it. Going to check out Legion or Atos next time I’m in town. source, 2020 ↗

Nice stuff- but aside from Atos and the University of Jiu Jitsu, I would say the tournament accomplishments and teacher credentials of the major schools in NYC are still higher- Marcelo's, Renzo/Danaher, and Unity. source, 2020 ↗

Was it Atos or University of JJ? They’re a bit known for high drop in fees IIRC. I’ve been to roughly 10 gyms in San Diego (spread out over a couple years) while visiting family and you’ve got a lot of great options. Honu BJJ, the Arena, 99 Jiu Jitsu, Victory MMA, Fabio Santos, they’re all awesome places I recommend. Of these, the Arena, Victory MMA, and Fabio Santos all have big names who were there and teaching the random classes I happened to drop by in. I’d recommend trying out all of these (and more), as for the drop in fee, only 3/10 ever actually charged and it was always ~$20. But I source, 2020 ↗
