Forget elite MMA fighter, any middle aged accountant who is a purple belt in BJJ would mop the floor with the best legionnaire in rome. Modern martial arts technique has evolved so much compared to the objectively inferior technique of the past. Now put a modern day elite, which I take to mean professional, MMA fighter? Noone in the history of the world beats them unarmed besides other modern day pros. People like Royce Gracie who dominated the first few UFCs (cause people had no idea how to counter BJJ), and who are considered legends, would lose to modern day journeymen. It's probably a mistake, but I will address your answer. I will assume all your facts are correct because I know nothing about the history of jiu jitsu in Brazil and I don't feel compelled to research it. 1. The article mentions the defeat of three judo players (only one of whom I had heard of before); this is not exactly what I would consider a large number of renowned players. And the Gracies didn't exactly dominate the matches: Yano 1W, 1DQ / Y Ono 1W, 2L, 4D / N Ono 3L But all of that is kind of beside the point. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is great, and there are definitely people with CP who train ([previous thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/9lozr7/bjj_and_cerebral_palsy/)). Being overweight is also no problem at all, lots of people train who are really obese, much heavier than you. By the way, "Gracie jiu-jitsu" can be thought of as either a synonym for, or a subset of, "Brazilian jiu-jitsju" -- the Gracies are a family with many important contributors, but they're part of a larger community.
