Do you have experience living in both cities on that kind of money? Because I do. Sydney just feels lonelier. And OP also states they don’t know anyone here. I ended up making lots of friends in Sydney but I had other international colleagues who found it very very hard regardless of how much they tried. Not everyone likes BJJ etc so the options may not even apply. Also, Melbourne culture is much more similar to Canada. source, 2025 ↗

The competitive combat sports scene. Long gone are days when Melbourne's combat sports was controlled in large part by our state's organised crime organisations. Today we have reputable fight gyms of all disciplines—Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Pugilism, etc—sprawled all across our great state that's owned by respectable and upstanding members of our community. The community comprises of Melbournians of all ages and walks of life; from the kids looking for refuge from their rough home environments, to investment bankers looking to escape the monotony of their offices. I've told this story a few times on here. Sold real estate in Melbs from the day I left high school until I was 30. My office was on the 11th floor over looking Albert Park Lake. Made stupid money for a young guy with no quals. Had a midlife crises and retrained as a history teacher. During the 4 years I was back at uni I was training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Turns out an 11 hour a week "full time" uni course is a piece of piss if you've been doing 70 hour weeks for 10 years, so I had quite a bit of time on the mats. Got quite good at it. Entered the teaching world in 2018. source, 2023 ↗
