I train at Carlson Gracie in Melbourne FL and they give you the option to live roll on Day 1 if you want, but recommend you watch for the first class. Live rolling and feeling effective technique will tell you right away if you really want to learn BJJ. Why keep people that don’t really want to learn? source, 2025 ↗

I can only speak to number 3, but I have found the "Jordan Teaches Jiu Jitsu" youtube channel to be perfect for this. Most items are short, explain the key points and sometimes even show the technique live rolling. He speaks over footage of the technique rather than teaching the technique like an actual class and talking at the camera like you see in instructionals. There's on screen comments as well. Can't recommend it enough. The other one I've been branching into recently is Lachlan Giles (Absolute MMA St Kilda - Melbourne is the youtube channel) stuff. This is a more traditional channel source, 2023 ↗

I love 10 P names such as the Lockdown and the people in the system are inspiring. One guy in particular that I like is Frank Barca, head instructor from 10p Melbourne, Australia. So positive and a great teacher too. When I was 17 a muay Thai instructor ran a class at my school and told me I had a natural talent. Was obviously a good sales technique coz I ended up at their school for 6 months before I realised how dodgy it was. I went to an MMA gym and this just as it was taking off in Australia and my mid sized town didn't have much else. I was doing muay Thai and seeing the BJJ training in the Gi and gave it a go, completely forgot about MT after my first week of jiu jitsu. The black belt at the club was average at best(now days I recognise he was a mcdojo) but one of the purple belts hung around after c source, 2022 ↗

Probably your good technique plus his kid invincibility. Childhood is THE best time to learn to fall. I was in gymnastics when I was pretty young and those skills have stuck with me for LIFE. source, 2013 ↗
