What Reddit says about Fight Back Academy

8 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.

A 1 vs 1 fight it's a fight where you are sure there is only one attacker, not a fight where the guy in front of you tell you so. Not to mention sometimes you don't have a choice, you get tackled down against your will and at that point BJJ become very helpful to quickly break free and get back to your feet (and hopefully escape) without getting brutalized in the process. There is a time and a place where knowing BJJ can save your life just like there are times where it's not suitable, for example since this video is about a girl it's worth noting that BJJ can be very helpful in domestic ab source, 2023 ↗

BJJ works extremely well for preventing rapes (altough it's far from a guarantee of success obviously) since it's a style designed to beat much bigger and stronger opponents and that also specifically teach you how to defend yourself and even win when you are forced on your back, which is very likley to happen in a sexual assault. There are a lot of real life examples where women fought-off or even killed male rapists with BJJ, for example: [https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2015/5/20/8629595/woman-triangle-chokes-attacker-unconscious-judge-awards-her-500-pounds-mma-newshttps:](https://www.bloodye source, 2022 ↗

LMAO - you think the Sultan of Dubai is in the BJJ business. He spends more than the extra few thousand in prize money when he sends his private planes to fly instructors into Abu Dabhi and back for privates. source, 2022 ↗

A little, I had been living in Australia and started bjj at an mma gym but was more into Muay Thai, trained there for like 2-3 months then came home in march 2020 and literally the day I came home was the lockdowns so I didn’t do Jiu jitsu from march until July when the gyms opened back up. But I hadn’t really been into bjj anyway so it wasn’t too bad. Then from July to December the gyms would open for a month then some fucking new restrictions would come in and they’d close for 2 months. Then In December 2021 they locked down again hard, I said fuck this as I was working remotely and went to source, 2022 ↗

Covid. It held me back at the peak of the pandemic. I started roughly a year before covid in the traditional sense (gi, belt system, etc.). I felt really motivated to start, because I had previously done some defensive tactics, and submission grappling. I was just starting to lose a bunch of weight and wanted to step it up with some exercise. I decided that regular gym wasn't going to cut it (as I easily lose motivation), so I signed up for BJJ and it was amazing. Then everything shut down. I managed to get into a gym for about two months mid Covid because they were the only gym in my area all source, 2022 ↗

Been on this sub for quite some time but never really posted anything 😅 Looks like it’s finally my turn to write about my journey! Started jiu jitsu in the small town of McAllen (Texas) training in GB where I fell in love with the sport. Got my blue belt from Draculino before moving back to Montreal to train under Bruno Fernandes. Work then took me to Abu Dhabi and then to Dubai where I received my purple belt from Khalid Walid and brown belt from Julio Dos Anjos. Last year, I moved to Oman and started training at 3MAC in Muscat where I eventually also ended up being a part time coach! And source, 2021 ↗

As a Canadian, I don’t plan to leave Dubai to go back to Canada. My quality of life here is miles ahead: - high income - Dubai summer heat > Canadian winter cold - super safe (more important when you have a family) - easy to travel to Europe and Asia - I have access to all my hobbies (eg jiu jitsu, off road biking, kite surfing, etc), and my kids get access to a lot more - super diverse friends circle and colleagues - this place keeps growing, with a bunch of new things to do every year I would only choose to live in Canada if I needed to rely on the social system, and if I felt the s source, 2021 ↗

So yesterday, after 11.5 years on the mat, I received my black belt from Prof. Steven Bongiorno at South Jersey Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Like a lot of people - I started training after seeing the very early UFCs and, as I was a victim of bullying in my childhood, the idea of being able to 'win' if you were smart but not necessarily strong was hugely appealing. I was 322lbs at the time and overall BJJ helped me lose 140-ish of that. I wrote a fairly (read: very) long piece about it back in 2011 after I got my purple belt which has received some very nice comments (includes my weight-loss photos) - source, 2018 ↗
