Hey Jesse, I’ll be in Tokyo next week and looking for a gym to train at from Mon-Wed. Living in the Oshiage/Asakusa area so I looked up Cave on google maps. I’d like to do both gi and nogi. Are Cave BJJ and Cave MMA two separate locations? Which would be better for grappling only? Are there any particular days and timings which would be better to attend? source, 2025 ↗

Cave BJJ in Tokyo is good. It's a 20 second walk from the nearest station and the owner, "Go" is a cool guy. Axis jiujitsu is awesome aswell. The instructor teachs in English and Japanese simultaneously. You could also check out the Kodokan if you're up for some judo training. If you happen to visit Kyoto, which is reasonably close to Osaka, search for "Enshin Dojo." It's hard to find but it's the kind of judo dojo that would be portrayed in a ninja anime. It's mystical. I never did any training while I was in Osaka but the comedy scene is good over there! Hard to say if any of these will hav source, 2025 ↗

I just returned from 2 weeks there in June. While in Tokyo I trained at “The Cave” BJJ which was wonderful. In Kyoto I went to Carpe Diem which was equally great. Gyms were so welcoming and drop in rates were reasonable. They rent Gis if you don’t want to travel with yours. English was barely spoken in the gyms (Tokyo had more English in the gym than Kyoto) but as with BJJ, you don’t need words to understand what is being taught. One thing of note, open mats in Japan are purely for drilling, not rolling like in the US. source, 2024 ↗
