In my real world I live rural Auckland feel completely safe and not worried about home invasion or burglary. I haven’t experienced personal crime in this country for about 10-15 years. House isn’t locked currently don’t think I’ve locked in in 5 or so years even when away. Regarding the self defence I’m a relatively big guy and have trained in muay Thai and bjj but my first instinct is to deescalate and only use force if necessary but that’s a very last resort that would include at home in the extremely unlikely scenario that someone comes inside my house uninvited. source, 2023 ↗

I think you have to be realistic about what self defence or martial arts can offer you. If you get attacked by a group, someone with a weapon, coward punched from behind, someone much stronger and more athletic etc, then the course *probably* won't help. There are many scenarios where self defence is useless. Similarly most martial arts aren't really oriented to realistc self defence scenarios. BJJ is decent in some ways, but most places spend the majority of their time on sport aspects. Also wrestling about on the ground is a bad option in many scenarios, maybe the attacker's friend now stom source, 2022 ↗

I've done Krav Maga in Auckland. It used to be called Combat Krav Maga but they came under new ownership and changed their name to Krav Fighter. There's also good Wing Chun classes, as well as Jiujitsu and BJJ classes you can Google and find easily. What kind of martial art are you interested in? One for practical self defence? Fitness? Simple interest in the art? Competition? source, 2022 ↗

Hi OP, Auckland has always been like this. I have been here for 40 years. Burglaries are carried out during the daytime because people with nice stuff to steal are out at work paying for it. Your best form of self-defence is to not leave the house after dark if you (and others close to you) are not fairly sober (can be difficult I know) and plan to go by Uber as far as possible from one controlled environment to another. Do not wander the streets. Those days are gone, if they ever existed. When you are home keep a telescopic baton or other piece of legitimate sports equipment handy, alo source, 2022 ↗

look into brazilian jiu jitsu. lots of places around in auckland and they often offer free trials. proven self defence techniques and less prone to mcdojo shit like krav maga and aikido that others have suggested. typical pricing ranges from $20-40 p/mo source, 2019 ↗
