I have wrestled my entire life and now have trained jiu jitsu for the last 6 years at Unity in New York which is one of the best schools in the world. I absolutely would not beat the shit out of my untrained friends for disrespecting me. I would pull them aside and have a conversation like an adult, and if they didn’t apologize I would stop being in contact with them. Im sure this will sound like a stretch but it happens much more than you would like to hear. He is grooming the girls. He needs them to have complete loyalty while being afraid to leave their friends/community/him. So later he knows they will be too afraid to speak up when he assaults them. Go on google and search “jiu jitsu instructor rapes student” there are hundreds of examples. Very famously FightSport has 5 black belts who are convicted rapists, some have been jailed others fled the country. The New York Times wrote an article about it. It's not really the coach. It's your training partners and how your coach teaches. My coach is an ex-UFC fighter and a big guy. He has done well in jiu-jitsu comps but the issue is that his style is not a competition winning style especially for lighter weights. One guy who really wants to be a world champion left because my coach just isn't teaching him the style he wants to play. Every time he'd be at the gym he'd drill bolo's with me and the coach would never teach it. So every time we would pretend to do the coaches moves and then he'd bolo. Well yes. I have a gym up the street from me that has like 3 classes a week. I obviously didn't pick that one. But there's a bigger school near me that's impossible to get to for me in any consistent manner. I picked a good community that's an easy commute. source, 2022 ↗

The commute is important, but so is the community. You want to find the right fit. If the gym is next door but has an awful atmosphere, you're better off finding a better one even if you have to go a bit further. That said, my gym is three blocks away and it's a Godsend being able to walk there, but I also love the community and energy there so I got lucky. source, 2022 ↗
