What Reddit says about Open Sparring
8 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.
Izzy saw Volk at an expo in Sydney and they both did some training with Volk's jiu jitsu trainer. I think Izzy and Volk also did some sparring and striking training. Volk had a vlog about it on his youtube and I think izzy posted it too. All the stuff we saw on the internet about Fury saying "i'm no cage fighter!" and pictures of him standing next to Alex were from Australia, all of them were there for that expo. source, 2023 ↗

What city are you in? And which gym did you go to? (I am asking cause I am also in AU in Sydney). As other people have mentioned the first class everyone feels like that. I did other Jitsu martial art for 4 years prior to Jiu Jitsu and was so damn confused in my first lesson. BJJ is available and open for everyone from all walks of life and every gym I have ever been to has been really friendly and welcoming. With people there for hardcore training, fitness, competition and just to be social. The beauty of it is. You don’t have to be good and you don’t have to be there for the same reason source, 2023 ↗

MyBJJ Westside, in Lidcombe. I know an international student who works as an ubereats bicycle rider, and he trains at MyBJJ in Camperdown. The Lidcombe location is closer to you so go there, those guys are really crazy good, they train with world champions in jiu jitsu. MyBJJ team won 2019 Sydney Open, and has always got medaling results in competitions. source, 2021 ↗

Personally train at alliance, have been to open sparring, sjja, gracie humaita and higher jiujitsu. Any gym will do if you find the right vibe for you so do some trial classes. Come on down to Alliance source, 2021 ↗

Where do you live/work? The best gym is the one that has a reasonable balance of the kind of training and culture you want as well as being accessible. I train at Higher Jiu Jitsu which is on that list and for an average person wanting to get in shape and learn in a friendly environment I’d says it’s ideal. It’s not a big completion gym though A few hundred meters away you’ve got open sparring which is more comp focused and a few hundred meters further you’ve got Garage who are another friendly gym. source, 2020 ↗

Come train at Open Sparring! The place has got no affiliation and the guys here are pretty much all on a world class level (even the white belts), costs $20 for drop-ins I think. We have just rolling sessions every weekday Tues/Thurs - 1-2pm (I think we are gonna be switching to 5pm soon tho - mainly cause I got school lol), Mon/Wed/Friday - 6pm-8pm. It's also less than a 5 min walk from Hyde Park! source, 2019 ↗
