It was at Keenan Cornelius' gym in San Diego. He's a spectacular coach and person. But he's not known for being traditional. When I started Jiu Jitsu at Saulo Ribeiros place, I got paired off with an upper belt for 1-2 days before they put me in the bullpen. The American model is very different from the rest of the developed world with exception of Canada. If you got to Europe for example there’s massive complexes or adjoining gyms. Often times general fitness on floor and boxing and mats on the other. You see it in alot of other places in the Bay Area and San Diego where rent is simply too high for bjj alone to be feasible. AKA, jocks gym come to mind off the top of my head. The boutique gyms will always be the exception like Caio Terra’s and atos. Every class gets packed there. Depends on where you are I guess. San Diego is the American capital of jiu jitsu. There are gyms all over the city, some being the best in the world. Since living here my game has gotten 100x better than when I was in Connecticut. There are competitions every weekend out here as well. Overall jiu jitsu has become a lot more popular so there’s no wrong in starting it source, 2024 ↗

Des Moines is your best choice. Check out the following gyms for your martial arts needs Des Moines Jii Jitsu, Renzo Gracie Academy, No Coast Jiu Jitsu, Talon Muay Thai, Round Kick Gym. There are also a few more fighter based gyms run by former UFC other lower end fight organizations As for shooting, we have plenty as well. From Isaac Walton League to several indoor shooting ranges that host shooting comps. There is also a longer range location called Banner that works well if you wanna shoot the big guns. I did some karate for a bit. I decided that wasn't for me. I quit and did a free class at San Diego Fight Club. I was hooked and signed up that day. Trained there for a year, then moved back to Ohio. I immediately found a jiu jitsu/mma school. I left there as a purple due to schedules not working. I moved to a Gracie affiliate and have been there ever since.
