National City Jiu Jitsu Club

Hey all, Im looking to join a BJJ gym here in San Diego. Any recommendations? I have no combat experience and live in the city. So anything that is beginner friendly/not a far commute would be great. source, 2025 ↗

yeah i know it's not the same. marcelo not being there alone is enough for that. im not looking for the absolute best bjj bc i believe that'd probably be austin tx. i just feel nyc is in contention for best city in the world, whereas austin has no claim whatsoever. san diego at least has amazing weather and beaches source, 2025 ↗

I grew up here, moved to San Diego and came back with a wife and young son. My wife is born and raised in socal. Positives There are decent places to get drinks, beer specifically but night life is not going to be the same as a city. Nature is obviously a big draw. You’re a couple hours from the Bay Area, which you can drive to if you miss a city. Since it’s a small place, you may see people frequently. I think it’s a great place to raise kids, if that’s something in the cards for you. Negatives If you’re big on Mexican food, it’s tough out here. My kid had a 4.3 GPA, 1490 SAT, plenty of AP classes. He attended a public high school that is nationally ranked in the top 300 by US News. His extracurricular, BJJ, was recreational-grade only… He didn’t cure cancer or anything, so I guess that’s a weak spot from a college admissions POV. Pleasant, affable, even keeled, not at all self entitled…. His college essays were pretty good IMO. He had good letters of recommendation from teachers and mentors. His parents, grandparents, and even some of his great grandparents are college graduates. He had no behavioral or disciplinary issues. We didn’ source, 2024 ↗

They are ok but difference between countries is enormous. Literally some purple belts from abroad are no more than white belts with 4 stripes. Black belts without competition experience etc. National champion or European champion tells much more. source, 2024 ↗
