Seattle is a very large area with famously bad traffic during rush hours, so unless you keep a weird schedule or are willing to spend a lot of time in your car, you'll be limited by where you live and work. 10th planet Seattle which is really in Bellevue. Nathan is by far the toughest guy I've ever rolled with and is really fun as a teacher. Martial arts are always pretty fun. "Unique" is hard to quantify, but however pop culture makes it seem they're still a pretty damn rare hobby. Places I've enjoyed when in the city or heard good things about in the city include: 1) Ten Kicks Gym (Haller Lake area) 2) Muay Thai Iyarin (North Queen Anne) 3) NWJJA (Aurora) 4) Definitive Jiu-jitsu (Greenwood) 5) Rain City Sumo (usually either at Dahl Field in the Wedgewood area or in the Central District) 6) The Budokan (or the Seattle Dojo) for Judo 7) Mat Chess MMA 8) Marcelo Alonso Jiu-jitsu I'm not super knowledgeable about the more trad source, 2024 ↗

I have been in Seattle about a year, and I (26F RN) also signed on as perm staff after extending my travel contract as many times as I could. I totally feel you, it has been so difficult to find community here. I am from the South, everyone is so friendly, warm, and actively tries to bring you into their friend group. It’s way different up here. Even my own cousins who live here froze me out. I think it’s the transplant culture, almost everyone here came from somewhere else, and is either here temporarily, or they have their own comfortable routine and don’t want to get to know new people. There are a ton of great gyms in the Seattle area. The area's BJJ community is generally pretty great. Try some out, talk to the people on the mats and find the place that feels best for you and your goals. These are some of the gyms I personally recommend: Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy - Brian Johnson is a multiple world champion and has been teaching for a long time so he's got a good number of black belts training in any given day. 10p Seattle, though technically outside of Seattle - Nathan Orchard is a beast and he's been building a killer crew. I just moved to Austin last month, and it really is the Mecca of jiu jitsu, at least right now. It might change in the future, but you can easily train with the best in the world (if you’re willing to pay for it). Before Austin, I was on a six month road trip training jiu jitsu around the country; went down the east coast from NJ to FL, then Texas, then went up the west coast from San Diego up to Seattle. What I can say is there is nothing like Austin. SoCal and the NJ tristate area have a ton of options for jiu jitsu, and I met a ton of cool, incredible people, but pound for pound it’s not e source, 2023 ↗

Hey man if you enjoy Brazilian jiu jitsu nyc has some of the best gyms in the world. Marcelo Garcia academy and unity jiu jitsu are both in Manhattan and are phenomenal places to train. The options for world class training in nyc blows Seattle and SF out of the water. I know it’s not your only deciding factor but it’s def a perk of living in nyc source, 2023 ↗

I’ve trained at GB Seattle from blue belt to black belt. I have never experienced any of the negativity that other posters have mentioned. Yes there are traditions, discipline, and culture involved but that is common for any martial art. For those people complaining about calling instructors “professor”- what do you expect? It is Brazilian jiu jitsu so of course there are some Portuguese terms used in class. Would you hate on Japanese jiu jitsu for using Japanese terms?? I have never seen a “professor” correct anyone for not addressing them using the term “professor” As far as complaining abo source, 2022 ↗

Yes, but I am a software engineer and had a business for many years and had to get tossed back on job market after losing it after 15+ years. Life has not been easy. Had to do training , learning, preparing 80hrs/week to get myself back into a competitive job market. Barely had time to leave my apartment. I am trying to get my crap together and live life like a normal human.. I could have ended up homeless and screwed as of a couple years ago. But, now I am pushing through and getting situated with the corporate world and being an employee again. Now that I can go out and explore its source, 2022 ↗
