**Brazil**, stayed at connection rio which was cool and got to meet to great people. Some of which went on to be world champions or fight in the UFC. I was a blue belt at the time and getting to spend 2 months visiting gyms across rio and getting to train with the legends of the sport was nuts at the time. I competed while I was over there as well and there's no ego killer like getting demolished off a 16 year old juvenile blue belt after winning your first match :) **Greece** (various islands) BJJ isn't super developed over in Greece. Interestingly, in LA (where BJJ in the USA originated) there are more judo clubs than wrestling ones. As a wrestler, I was surprised to learn it. It's true that wrestling is more popular most other places in the US, but some cities have good judo. I've heard it's also strong up in San Francisco and in NYC. source, 2023 ↗

San Diego is cheap to live. Compared to NYC, Chicago, San Francisco or l.a. anywhere else, it's expensive a.f. that said I don't think there's anywhere in the United States or really the world where the BJJ is better. Legion is awesome by reputation I've never trained there. I would say there are a thousand amazing schools all over San Diego so it's hard to go wrong. source, 2020 ↗

From what I have seen, Gracie style is the old school self defense variant from the 70’s. I personally think it is really cool and that style does come with a lot of great fundamentals that work well in competition. I trained with Carley Gracie in San Francisco and he would bring in plastic knives every now and then and teach standing arm locks, ankle locks, how to close the distance if someone throws a haymaker, how to grapple someone who bear hugs you from behind or pins you against a wall with a hand choke. All these sort of real world scenarios that you wouldn’t see in competition. On top source, 2020 ↗

San Francisco has a strong MMA community. MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and we not only have local MMA schools in the area but there are fights every few months at Kezar and there's even a pro shop in the Outer Mission. There's also Boxing, Judo, Muay Thai, Jiu-jitsu and other schools that are connected to the MMA scene. You should cover that. source, 2019 ↗
