I would recommend BJJAA in Amsterdam if you're choosing Amsterdam. High level there, you have a multiple time adult adult black belt world, european, and pan medallist there in Rose. I've trained there and was very welcomed and had a nice time. Another friend on secondment to the Netherlands trained there and really enjoyed it too. Also I wouldn't think driving is the best idea, you could more likely take the train from Utrecht? I trained a nogi session at Exist in Utrecht and they were welcoming though if I remember the space was pretty small. source, 2025 ↗

Got a friend in the Netherlands in Utrecht, the bjj scene is not quite big compared to the UK or Germany, probably best place to go is elevation bjj, it’s a small bike ride from the center of the city. Don’t know much about community but when I visited there the people were nice even without me knowing Dutch, it’s a very close language to English just with some difference, same way Portuguese is to Spanish. For going to Amsterdam, I wouldn’t really recommend it if it’s 40 minutes, if you’re willing to and have the time in your day sure but I’d say try out a few gyms in Amsterdam and Utrecht, j source, 2025 ↗

Why not try to go to a school in Europe for college? The Netherlands has great gyms, especially for kickboxing but also BJJ and crossfit/strength. Amsterdam is an awesome city and would be a great place to study. source, 2022 ↗

I know Carlson Gracie Amsterdam is open, so I assume training is open in the Netherlands. Though most likely with some restrictions. UK, definitely not, 'normal' gyms are only opening at the end of this month so I'd assume it will be a while for BJJ still. There is some training in Germany and Austria, as I have friends there training. source, 2020 ↗

I wonder how much of this is cultural. Whenever I talk to my North American friends they will say how rampant bullying was, especially in high school. It almost seems as if everyone in high school got assigned their personal bully. I grew up in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and there people who got teased sometimes, but not nearly to the level I read about in the American media. Granted, I might have been captain oblivious, and perhaps nowadays the media pays more attention to it, but I can’t escape this feeling that there must be a cultural element to it. Maybe that’s also why there are so many source, 2020 ↗

Not really a far trip from Amsterdam but BJJ gyms are still rare in the north of the Netherlands. I train at Focus Jiu Jitsu in Groningen (formerly a GB school) i’m sure they’d love to host you. source, 2019 ↗
