What Reddit says about True Grit Jiu Jitsu

4 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.

Second this - particularly bjj - great community. A number of gyms around Melbourne have women’s specific classes if you’re keen to mostly meet other women too. Different situation from you (late 30s male) but I’ve found making friends in Melbourne been brutal and the community from bjj has been a possibly literal lifesaver. Also if you know what sort of music/gigs you like finding the event pages on fb/insta and just saying hey does anyone want to meet up there could be a good in. Painting classes/movie meetups - not sure what genre you’re specifically into but true north bar in coburg source, 2025 ↗

I personally have not trained in Zendokai\\* Karate (ZDK), but I have seen your typical ZDK practitioners. My sensei was actually within that generation to see ZDK start from its humble beginnings. Everything I say in this comment is anecdotal, either from what I've seen or is a regurgitation of mostly casual post-training deep and meaningful chats I've had with my sensei over the years. Whether or not it is true, take what you will with a grain of salt. ZDK was started by a Bob Jones back in the 70s(?) in Melbourne Australia. Before Bob Jones started ZDK, he was training under a Tino Cerebr source, 2024 ↗

True that. Create a list of everything you’ve been mildly interested in and take some classes. Whatever it is there’s almost definitely going to be a class for it, especially in a city like Melbourne. When I moved to Melbourne I knew no one, started taking futsal classes every Saturday (I sucked), met some people and started playing on teams with them twice a week. When I moved to Singapore it was boxing, then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and now I live in Bali it’s still BJJ - I’m introverted as fuck but I’m always meeting new people and I’ve made some really good friends when moving to cities whe source, 2019 ↗
