I do not know why individuals sandbag but I have seen some coaches hold their students back for varies reasons. One of the coaches I respected the most in my jiu jitsu journey said to me, you won't get a black belt until you can give me a challenge in sparring. He said this because he felt that if any one of his students fought another black belt they should feel okay going up against. This coach of mine was a IBJJF european champion and former UFC fighter with a 5-3 record. That being said, I have seen other coaches hold students back so they can win medals. I used to skydive often in dubai and met a cool brazilian dude with the ears. Bruno Silva. We became friends and I would train at an mma gym and actually went there too I just didnt know him and he was the pro class. When I saw him there we would just chat at warms before classes and I went to the ammy or cardio class. He went in to be the UAE LW mma champion and then he got called up to be an opponent for Anderson Silva in a boxing expo (he doesnt box and is way smaller than silva) He got paid out nicely from the Silva fight and is the UAE pride n joy honestly would love to see him in the source, 2023 ↗

But, well, yeah, I'm thinking that the marginal gain of flying out a world champion to teach you the same intermediate level stuff that everyone learns in their first couple years of training is well... marginal. Way to go and you are actually right, at our age (57) we won't be a Abu Dubai champions anytime soon, but Jiu-jitsu has been an amazing part of my life and it sounds like yours too. Meeting great friends, learning new things, and great way to keep in shape. I am having the most fun in life than I could ever imagine, my academy is beyond cool.
