If you know so much about SoCal hardcore then how do you not know about the Church? It was literally in The Decline of Western Civilization, it's where Black Flag played their early shows and even lived for a time in the late 70's. Huntington Beach is not even in Los Angeles county, it developed a hardcore scene because it was a good place to do shows, and hardcore kept a pretty strong presence there after it "died" in LA in the mid-80's so the name has always been around (Revelation moving there helped). You got Checkmat HQ, Gracie Barra HQ, Brazilian Top Team HQ, the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, 10th Planet HQ in Los Angeles, Machado BJJ, the list goes on and on. Where in SoCal are you? There is very good jiujitsu in San Diego county. BJJ is pretty easy to get into. Just pick a gym, tell them you want to do a 1-day trial/class, and they should be able to get you set up. I would advise showing up 30 mins early, so you have time to fill out the paperwork and have one of the higher belts show you some basic warmups and concepts. IME tho, most gyms are pretty dialed in when it comes to working with beginners. You may or may not be asked to roll (spar) in your first class. I would advise you to go for it. I mean the states with larger populations have a larger pool to pull for and also have had a more competitive Jiu Jitsu scene for a longer length of time. SoCal probably has more tournaments in a month then somewhere like New Mexico has in a full year for example. More competitions, more competitors and more experience. That isn’t to say the smaller states don’t have their gems but from a numbers point of view you’re going to have more from larger populations. Add in length of time and it gets more obvious. It’s a lot easier when you know people in the city/area. I lived in Los Angeles for almost 6 years. But I am good at BJJ and knew a lot of people on the area through the sport. If I didn’t know anyone, I doubt I could have afforded to live there. It took a to figure out the costs too. Gas cost more but travel was shorter and mpg higher after I figured out the best times to drive, so the price per month was about the same for transportation. So many high quality food and other stores are available. Even the thrift and dollar stores are better in SoCal, so it can make up for the cost of living source, 2022 ↗

My favorite story of this era is how after founding Shooto. Satoru Sayama saw the first UFC event and went "Damn, I got do this myself". He organized the Vale Tudo Open Japan tournament in 1994, he tried to get Royce Gracie but instead got something even better: his older brother Rickson, the so-called "Champion" of the Gracie family. Royce won trhough the UFC with his jiu-jitsu grappling skills. Rickson didn't even need them, he could just throw you into the ground and ground-and-pound the fuck out of you, he smashed through the Vale Tudo Japan '94 and became a big figure in the combat sport source, 2022 ↗
