In BJJ the situation is crazier bro, the top guys go to the USA and the second/third tier to the UAE. my old master went to Dubai to teach lol and he wasn't even a particularly famous one or anything like that, honestly. I'm pretty sure they used to invite even regional level black belts to go there, for good money. source, 2024 ↗

I think it's about the profile. Some 2 bit gym in a podunk town run by a no name black belt? Nobody cares. But presumably the wrong thing coming out about the wrong person or school could be a big deal. Especially if it leads to a cascade effect where more and more dirty laundry comes out about various events and schools allover the place. source, 2024 ↗

Been on this sub for quite some time but never really posted anything 😅 Looks like it’s finally my turn to write about my journey! Started jiu jitsu in the small town of McAllen (Texas) training in GB where I fell in love with the sport. Got my blue belt from Draculino before moving back to Montreal to train under Bruno Fernandes. Work then took me to Abu Dhabi and then to Dubai where I received my purple belt from Khalid Walid and brown belt from Julio Dos Anjos. Last year, I moved to Oman and started training at 3MAC in Muscat where I eventually also ended up being a part time coach! And source, 2021 ↗

Hah. As it happens, the one person I know who packed up from London in order to move to Europe and teach BJJ was about 39 at the time. And one of our black belts moved himself and his wife to Dubai last year at around 37. It's absolutely true that, just on a law of probability basis, anyone whose employment pitch is 'Move to this foreign country and teach BJJ for six - seven months' is probably going to end up hiring a young man. So yesterday, after 11.5 years on the mat, I received my black belt from Prof. Steven Bongiorno at South Jersey Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Like a lot of people - I started training after seeing the very early UFCs and, as I was a victim of bullying in my childhood, the idea of being able to 'win' if you were smart but not necessarily strong was hugely appealing. I was 322lbs at the time and overall BJJ helped me lose 140-ish of that.
