Fellow Expat living and training in Costa Rica here. I'll definitely stop by next time I'm down south. Uvita is absolutely beautiful. We thought about moving there when we first came down, but ended up in the Central Valley just for the convenience since we have three teenagers who need easy access to school and university and what not. One of our purple belts does some outreach in our area as well, so we have a bunch of kids training for free. It really is amazing how good it is for them. I bookmarked the site so I can make a donation or buy some merch when I get home later. Looks like yo source, 2025 ↗

Nah, the only way I can see someone granting themselves rank in martial arts is if you are the soke of a system, and even then the legitimacy of your sokeship depends on your previous training under other legit masters. Carl Cestari for example was soke of the Tekken Ryu Jiu Jitsu system, but he held black belt rank in karate and Judo from Yoshisada Yonezuka who I believe was an Olympic Judo Coach for team USA, also he held an instructor's certificate from Charles Nelson who was a hand to hand combat instructor for the marine corps during WWII and spent the next 50 years after the war teaching source, 2025 ↗

Donald Trump is set to take office next week, and if anyone’s prepared, it’s Meta, which spent the past week announcing a sweeping set of policy changes that seem to ready the tech and social media giant for Trump 2.0. It all started on Jan. 7, when Meta announced the end of its third-party fact-checking program and overarching changes to its speech policies, which were quietly executed [by a se source, 2025 ↗

The moment that a top MMA prospect aspires to reach that next level, they graduate from Canada and go down to Florida, Colorado, Arizona, Vegas, Cali, New York etc etc. There have been exceptions GSP, Rory, OAM - all Tri-Star alumni by the way, and even they have occasionally gone to USA gyms to one extent or another for specialty training Tri-Star is still an option, but they're in a a bit of a lull at the moment. And it's up in Quebec, it's pretty out of the way. After Tri-Star, I don't think anything  comes close in Eastern Canada. Like Toronto and the greater Toronto area (About 8 millio source, 2024 ↗

In the 1930s, the photographer Weegee revolutionized photojournalism with his stark portraits of urban crime scenes, often shooting the aftermath of violent murders and horrific accidents before the authorities arrived. But what the public couldn't have known at the time was that the real innovations in photographic reportage had come the previous decades, and not from the press or even from fine art—but from police photographers, who combined the documentary possibilities of black-and-white exposure with another fledgling science: forensic pathology. The commute is important, but so is the community. You want to find the right fit. If the gym is next door but has an awful atmosphere, you're better off finding a better one even if you have to go a bit further. That said, my gym is three blocks away and it's a Godsend being able to walk there, but I also love the community and energy there so I got lucky. source, 2022 ↗

Congrats, Jacob! Super well-deserved, and if Weiss wouldn't turn me into a human pretzel next time we see him, I'd vote for Ariel to be his official nickname. source, 2022 ↗

In NY now, training for the last three years at Shaolin's. Mostly interested in how to spend a few months between wrapping up classes/work here are starting next fall in Fresno. A BJJ tour of the U.S. seemed like a decent idea. source, 2015 ↗
