New Ground Jiu Jitsu

I did just that with a G19 for my EDC. TLR7A, Trijicon RMR T2 3.25MOA. I work nights & sometimes leave work after midnight in a highly gang/drug/transient infested area of Los Angeles. Offsite parking. Shitty street lighting in the area. There were trade offs I had to make, though. I’m only 5’9ish. I went from 198 at my heaviest to currently 163. Waist went from a 36ish to now about a 30ish. My current jeans size is 32, but I can fit a fist between my waist & the actual waistband of the pants. Like, it’s starting to fall off my waist. My response to the question is based upon my own personal experience in Judo since 1965. I don’t give advice. Kodokan Judo in the United States is stalled. There are administrative hurdles that are directly impacting students. The number of dojos has decreased since COVID. The marketing of BJJ has reduced the number of new judo students. The Tokyo Olympics was a wake-up for American Judo. No medals. The NGB is scrambling to improve that record in 2028 in Los Angeles. Too soon to tell. I have not seen people flocking to American dojo following World or Olympic medalists coming home. I have t source, 2023 ↗

Yes. His talk on comparing knowing jujitsu to swimming really stuck with me. If you know how to swim and you’re dropped in deep water, there’s no problem. Knowing jujitsu is a similar phenomenon. I walked into a gym called Autore in Los Angeles. I was nervous but found it to be a very welcoming & positive environment. The two brothers who teach there are awesome and very encouraging regardless of your background or experience in training. It’s probably the most humbling thing I’ve ever done. That is amazing. This is how BJJ was when I lived in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I'm sure it's the same in Los Angeles and New York City. Actually, Los Angeles probably has this many Judo clubs in a short distance of each other. source, 2022 ↗

I mean the states with larger populations have a larger pool to pull for and also have had a more competitive Jiu Jitsu scene for a longer length of time. SoCal probably has more tournaments in a month then somewhere like New Mexico has in a full year for example. More competitions, more competitors and more experience. That isn’t to say the smaller states don’t have their gems but from a numbers point of view you’re going to have more from larger populations. Add in length of time and it gets more obvious. I moved to Austin about 16 years ago from Los Angeles. As some other posters have indicated, the jiu jitsu scene was a little behind compared to bigger cities. I was a purple belt then and it was a big deal (it definitely was not when I was in LA). There were only two black belts in the whole city back then. Things had changed quite a bit pre Covid. But once that hit and the New Wave/ B Team move happened, it seems like people are now relocating to Austin specifically for jiu jitsu. That definitely was not the case even a few years ago. My favorite story of this era is how after founding Shooto. Satoru Sayama saw the first UFC event and went "Damn, I got do this myself". He organized the Vale Tudo Open Japan tournament in 1994, he tried to get Royce Gracie but instead got something even better: his older brother Rickson, the so-called "Champion" of the Gracie family. Royce won trhough the UFC with his jiu-jitsu grappling skills. Rickson didn't even need them, he could just throw you into the ground and ground-and-pound the fuck out of you, he smashed through the Vale Tudo Japan '94 and became a big figure in the combat sport source, 2022 ↗
