Definitely get to a different gym! Maybe even visit several, do drop ins and pick one you like. I’d think it would be a challenge to be ready for blue if there are no opportunities to practice sparring. This is not that way other gyms are. I recommend checking out Frogtown Jiu Jitsu in Los Angeles if you’re in Pasadena. It’s a lot closer than San dimas. Paul Schreiner is incredible. source, 2025 ↗

I live in Los Angeles where there are an insane number of BJJ schools and it seems like a majority of them are charging anywhere from $180 to $220 a month. A Gracie Jiu Jitsu CTC school just recently opened up in Pasadena and according to the website they're charging $200 for 8 classes a month, which I think is too pricey if you can only go twice a week. I wish BJJ wasn't so expensive. No one likes to talk about it, but it's a very costly hobby. source, 2024 ↗
