It’s a $50K difference in salary. Cost of living in Sydney is expensive but not that much. $70k might be comfortable but there wouldn’t be much for future planning. Re: dont like BJJ? Cool. I named 5 other examples of activities on where to make friends. Aside from my job, I had to rebuild my life after Covid. Whole new groups of friends. It really isn’t hard if you put some effort into it. source, 2025 ↗

I met him when he was just some random wrestler white belt transitioning to bjj. We trained at the same gym for a few months in Ohio. My lasting memory of him was, someone had told him some trivia question about “what’s the capital of Australia”. And he was just so proud he knew the capital of australia. Like, for the first time in his life he knew something that made him feel smart. So one day the whole practice he’s just asking people “what’s the capital of Australia” and they say Sydney and he laughs at them and says no it’s Canberra. He seemed so proud of himself and he just kept aski source, 2024 ↗

19 too late to start grappling competitively? been playing ball sports and running track basically my whole life, always liked watching boxing and MMA but never liked the idea of getting hit on/hitting the head, but since high school I got introduced to no-gi BJJ/freestyle wrestling through some workshops at uni, and now seriously considering starting, at least for the sake of learning some self defense and keeping a high level of fitness. but for every sport i've played, i'm aware starting after childhood/high school will probably cut off the possibility of ever competing at a decent level source, 2024 ↗

I used to train with a guy who coach several eastern bloc national level freestyle wrestling teams. His wife was a freestyle Olympian at the Sydney Olympics, she didn't win medal but did well enough. When I first started training with him, she would come watch and give tips occasionally. Then she got pregnant and stopped showing up. Two weeks after the baby arrived she came out. She put on her boots and started warming up. At the time, I was training twice a day, in the best shape of my life. I had just pedaled at pan's (blue, lightweight) and earned 7th place at worlds. I thought, "ok, I'll source, 2024 ↗

I was before I joined, and still am now, part of the hardcore punk musical subculture. Moving to Townsville now for six years has completely taken that away from me, the one thing my life has pretty much been structured around from the age of 15 to 29 (when I joined) as there is no scene here. All my friends are in Newcastle, Sydney, Bris/GC or Melbourne but ironically more of them live in the UK or the US due to the nature of the subculture. Good thing I’m moving back to the UK when I get out, plus I’m in the US at least twice a year. I have zero civilian friends in Townsville apart from peop source, 2023 ↗

What city are you in? And which gym did you go to? (I am asking cause I am also in AU in Sydney). As other people have mentioned the first class everyone feels like that. I did other Jitsu martial art for 4 years prior to Jiu Jitsu and was so damn confused in my first lesson. BJJ is available and open for everyone from all walks of life and every gym I have ever been to has been really friendly and welcoming. With people there for hardcore training, fitness, competition and just to be social. The beauty of it is. You don’t have to be good and you don’t have to be there for the same reason source, 2023 ↗

I'm going to make this clear to you because you have no idea about josh and his skills, you're basing everything off the time it's taken him to obtain his rank, and he is very deserving don't you worry. Josh is an excellent teacher, he is a super successful coach in life skills, gym and Jiu-Jitsu, his knowledge isn't just on his 'A game' but spans across a wide variety of techniques and positions. As well as his dedication to the sport which is unparalleled bar people at Sydney West martial arts, their gym is undoubtedly one of Australia's best and the head coach Luke is unreal in his underst source, 2022 ↗

T1: Have you ever seen someone you know from one area of your life in another one? How was it? Say, you see an old friend when hanging out with other group of friends, or anything like that. I once went to an academic conference at the University of Sydney and bumped into the ex girlfriend of one of my friends back in Perth. It was a tad odd, because it was a super professional environment, and in the past we'd mostly encountered each other in the context of very rowdy and boozy heavy metal shows. We just awkwardly said, "Fancy seeing you here!" and then got on with our days. T2: What's so source, 2021 ↗
