i'm so sorry for your loss. by all accounts he was a great man and well respected in the houston community. i know on reddit people like to dump on gracie barra but gb westchase was truly something special. i went to the roger gracie seminar there and everyone was so welcoming (i was one of handful of people not from gb). and i know of a lot of people not under gb that would cross train at westchase. this is a true loss for our community. source, 2026 ↗

GB gets a lot of flack, but Houston has some great instructors from that network. Pablo Silva used to be under them as well, but went his own way with great success. Brian Marvin used to be under GB too until switching to Renzo's and is now expanding schools and affiliations rapidly. Renzo Gracie Lake Houston or Renzo Grazie Huffman might be close for you. The best NO Gi Gym in Houston is The Darkside Jiu Jitsu. It’s owned by a Dean Lister Black Belt. I train there. It’s a very fun and competitive gym with great instruction and they/we are the cities best leg locking gym. It’s not inside the “loop” but i promise it’s worth the drive. I would say it’s one of the Better NO Gyms in Texas but those New Yorkers just claimed that title with the 2 gyms in Austin. What belt are you? source, 2023 ↗

Trained/visited at 3 different gyms in Houston. BJJ only gyms in Houston has high level athletes all around and $150-195 is about what you would expect to pay. Pablo Silva’s gym is high quality instruction and competitors but Pablo won’t give two shits about you as an individual unless you are high level competitor—he tells this you in class as well. If your circumstances change and need to contact him for pausing/canceling membership, he is very unprofessional about it and will purposely ignore you for weeks. Beware. source, 2022 ↗

Dude everyone's first day is rough. I did a one month trial. Loved it. Thought I'd puke for the first week, then snapped something in my right hand middle finger. Sucked. Pretty much missed the rest of the month. That was 2017. I started again last week, even fatter and more out of shape than in 2017. Same thing, almost puked both classes last week, almost passed out this morning. That's just doing the warmup and drills. Hang in there bro. Some small karate dude came for a free try last Thursday. Even he was gassed by the warmup. He said it was way different than the one he does in karate. source, 2019 ↗
