You totally can do Judo at your age and fitness level. I would recommend the books The Pyjama Game and Falling Hard by Mark Law - a London journalist who started judo at 50 and got to black belt. He trained at the Budokwai in London. That said, I would recommend you consider BJJ too. It is based on judo and very similar, but it emphasises fighting on the ground (newaza) more than throws. It's much easier on the body and less injury prone - though injuries are a real issue with both sports. Good luck! source, 2025 ↗

Paddy couldn’t be any further from the Till blue print if you tried. Till was a Muay Thai specialist who was undisciplined and pushed way too early, he had next to zero ground game (decent clinch and use of under hooks) but not very well rounded. Paddy has really great bjj and is relatively decent everywhere bit sloppy on the striking but it’s due to off beat timing imo and his head may well get him in trouble. I don’t see him beating Arman or Islam but I’d say give him porier or Charles to see if he’s that good, if he looses his next fight give him BSD for the fans both euros so could do i source, 2025 ↗

I will give you all the perspective of someone who has been lurking here for 6 months and wants to start but frankly I’m nervous / frightened. Was inspired by listening to jocko willink podcasts from episode 1 9 months ago to change my life for the better. Background I am 53 year old, I was 140kg but thanks to dieting, eating health food now we have a lady who comes and cooks for us three times a week and thus stop eating take aways etc. Plus personal trainer 3 times a week and weights at home I’m down to 115kg. Secondly my job is a medical doctor (anaesthesiologist) I cannot afford to inj source, 2025 ↗

No national body. There's WJJF which was big in the 80s and has some off shoots in Manchester I think but I haven't heard anything good of them. I am not aware either of competitions. It's a big difficult to spare when the main focus is disabling your opponent. Saying that I've seen videos online of Japanese Jujitsu in the states where they have controlled sparing, just never come across it in the UK Judo and BJJ perfect for pressure testing given there's very well established rules to ensure some level of safety, although accidents do happen of course. Can recommend London Jujitsu, which i source, 2024 ↗

I was born in Leicester, grew up in St Matthews/Highfields area and had a general bad view of living in Leicester due to the deprivation and crime I was accustomed to. I left for 11 years and I've returned buying a house in South Leicestershire area. I'm really enjoyed by time back, in comparison living in London, and Surrey. My children go to good schools, good facilities for the kids all within 5 min drive (soft play, farms, adventure playgrounds), I play football weekly, go to Jiu Jitsu, go to swimming - I don't think there's a place in the UK that is better bang for buck - this is a ve source, 2024 ↗

I don’t know if our American friends are familiar with the UK term “bellend”. This guy is a bell end. Poor girl, she worked so hard to graduate and this idiot father did this? I love the fact that my twelve year old son is growing up in London surrounded by every language, friends from every background, exposure to every religion and race. And he just gets on with it. Enjoying it. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it helps to be part of the global community. He’s half/half too. Came back from an amazing month in Brazil on a jiu jitsu training camp. His other side is Irish. He’s the mos source, 2024 ↗

Depends on what you mean by “know martial arts”. (A) There are people who’ve formally trained in martial arts with teachers and all that, (B) then there are those who are self-taught and learned it either through movies, reading, or watching tutorials online, (C) and then there are those who just know certain moves without knowing their martial art background at all and only uses it ‘cuz they saw someone else do it. All 3 could tie together TBH and I think Nate could possibly apply to any of them. For one thing, Victor Sullivan (an ex-navy officer) flatout confirmed he trained Nate in armed source, 2023 ↗
