Sydney West Martial Arts, Grappling Education and Sydney Wrestling Academy are some of the higher level gyms in Sydney. Ive heard of some of the other ones mentioned below, movement martial arts, garage jiu jitsu, Mybjj, and Legacy. That pretty much covers the main competing gyms, there are other good guys who compete from other spots but they are usually outliers in their gym. source, 2023 ↗

SWMA Pros:- Good coach and good competitors - if you're interested in competing no-gi it's a good place to go. They do Danaher / Jason Rau stuff. Cons: Roid heads and perhaps a rough training environment. people seem to get injured a bit. Mainly feet and they don't seem to care. Absolute MMA Pros: Better location than SWMA and you'd probably like Melbourne. Lachy is a good coach if you can get close. There are tonnes of students though. I don’t believe that class structure is unique to John. Lachlan ran a very similar format when I was training in Melbourne and it works great there, even for the hobbiests. In Sydney I use a similar format in my classes at Grappling Education and SJJA and you see the same at Sydney West Martial Arts where I train. I strongly believe that, for the most part, warmups for Jiu Jitsu is just a way for a coach to waste a good chunk of time. source, 2023 ↗

In general, short answer is anyone from Keller Locke Sodhi’s gym Grappling Education is good to look out for. Keller won the last trials and had a close match with Murilo Santana. Sydney West Martial Arts (SWMA) is the other leading nogi gym in the current local scene, headed by Luke Martin. Now there’s also the incredibly long answer, since you guys are an important witness to have. Keep in mind, I am just a blue belt who is an enormous fan of the local competitors.
