If I was a fighter in the market for a team, I’d have a few ideas… Tiger Muay Thai, because they’ve produced several champs and the location is awesome. Location does matter. American Top Team in Coconut Creek. They know how to produce champions and the MMA scene in South Florida is high. Tristar in Montreal. They’ve produced GSP and they have a connection with Renzo Gracie in NYC, so you can go back and forth to a very high level BJJ training center. Onyx in Colorado with Trevor Wittman. I originally started bjj around 1999 as well. I had the advantage of having a great instructor who was a purple belt. He explained his own struggles of having to train by getting the Gracie VHS tapes and constantly traveling to seminars or flying out to California a couple times a year (we're in the middle of nowhere-midwest) to get a few weeks of training in at a time. Now that I've started back up he's a multi-striped black belt and it's crazy to see how large bjj has gotten since then and how much more technique exists... anyway, thanks for the story!
