Peace and prayers to Ulpiano, his family, and my brothers and sisters in jiu jitsu. I started my BJJ journey sometime around 2011 at Ulpiano’s school in Westchase. I still remember pulling up for the first time, sitting outside intimidated and unsure if I even wanted to walk in. I was there 2012-2013. I joined there hoping to get more active. Ended up losing 54 lbs through his weight-loss challenge, worked as an instructor assistant to his kids’ class, competed twice and he gave me the nickname “Balut” because I’m Filipino. I would always bring balut in class every time someone gets promoted to a new belt and we would have laughs seeing people try to eat one. i'm so sorry for your loss. by all accounts he was a great man and well respected in the houston community. i know on reddit people like to dump on gracie barra but gb westchase was truly something special. i went to the roger gracie seminar there and everyone was so welcoming (i was one of handful of people not from gb). and i know of a lot of people not under gb that would cross train at westchase. this is a true loss for our community. source, 2026 ↗

GB gets a lot of flack, but Houston has some great instructors from that network. Pablo Silva used to be under them as well, but went his own way with great success. Brian Marvin used to be under GB too until switching to Renzo's and is now expanding schools and affiliations rapidly. Renzo Gracie Lake Houston or Renzo Grazie Huffman might be close for you. The best NO Gi Gym in Houston is The Darkside Jiu Jitsu. It’s owned by a Dean Lister Black Belt. I train there. It’s a very fun and competitive gym with great instruction and they/we are the cities best leg locking gym. It’s not inside the “loop” but i promise it’s worth the drive. I would say it’s one of the Better NO Gyms in Texas but those New Yorkers just claimed that title with the 2 gyms in Austin. What belt are you? source, 2023 ↗
