What Reddit says about Gracie Barra West Ryde

8 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.

Bjj has a massive hateboner for Josh because of his Gordon affiliation(I don't like what he did with Mo and Craig either thought that was some bullshit but important to separate your bias on subjects like this). I've used both and am no longer a subscriber of either, they're both great services I just take notes screenshots of everything and then stop after a month or two because I'll have plenty to work on. I think hpu is better for beginners it's a more streamlined system, the guys at Sydney west from what I understand have come up with an extremely efficient system and he shows moves with source, 2024 ↗

That's still a pretty big radius. For the inner west, I'd say Mybjj or Legacy are both great gyms. source, 2023 ↗

I don’t believe that class structure is unique to John. Lachlan ran a very similar format when I was training in Melbourne and it works great there, even for the hobbiests. In Sydney I use a similar format in my classes at Grappling Education and SJJA and you see the same at Sydney West Martial Arts where I train. I strongly believe that, for the most part, warmups for Jiu Jitsu is just a way for a coach to waste a good chunk of time. source, 2023 ↗

Start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Everyone is really welcoming and friendly. Give it a try. If you are Penrith go try at Sydney West Martial Arts. All the people there are friendly and great people. Tell them The Half Guard Prince sent you and that he can easily defeat Suppo in a battle. source, 2023 ↗

In general, short answer is anyone from Keller Locke Sodhi’s gym Grappling Education is good to look out for. Keller won the last trials and had a close match with Murilo Santana. Sydney West Martial Arts (SWMA) is the other leading nogi gym in the current local scene, headed by Luke Martin. Now there’s also the incredibly long answer, since you guys are an important witness to have. Keep in mind, I am just a blue belt who is an enormous fan of the local competitors. Hopefully one of these actual big names with better jiu jitsu can offer more relevant insight on who the top guys are, and p source, 2022 ↗

Here’s some of my favourites to visit in different cities: Melbourne: Absolute MMA (St Kilda & CBD), Immersion Ringwood, Mustang Sports Centre Sydney: myBJJ Westside (Lidcombe), Gracie Jiu Jitsu Sydney, (Sydney Wrestling Academy is on my list for next time) Queensland: Full Metal Jiu Jitsu, Base Gracie Jiu Jitsu Outside of that if you’re going through Perth you’d be crazy to not visit William Dias’ gym, he recently got silver at AJP beating Tommy Langaker (controversially), but regardless has an impressive resume. And if you’re driving between Melbourne and Sydney then feel free to st source, 2022 ↗

Festivals almost every weekend, the large number of theatres (plays / musicals). Huge Craft beer scene, large range of good restaurants serving all types of cuisines, good Jiu Jitsu gym. I've travelled a lot of Australia and regional towns are wonderful to visit but I need variety where I live and I have no interest living North, South or West Sydney and travelling in to enjoy these things, I want them on my doorstep and happy to pay for that. source, 2022 ↗

I would recommend Higher Jiu Jitsu in the CBD. They were formally Pedro Sauer, now Gracie Jiu Jitsu so the element of self defense that you are looking for is there. Excellent fundamental instruction. John the head instructor is a beast. I stopped by there in December while I was visiting Sydney and was not disappointed. First class was free. source, 2018 ↗
