I’d assume you’re either in San Diego or Austin, having that many expensive world class gyms around isn’t common lol. Honestly as someone also with a TKD-Boxing background (12 and 5 years) BJJ clicked for me and became very addictive very fast. That being said, those are outlandish prices and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing judo. If you want to transition to BJJ down the road, having a judo skill set is a large advantage and will lessen the initial learning curve. source, 2025 ↗

If you’re just starting out, I’d suggest looking for a school that specializes solely in grappling or jiu jitsu. These schools often offer a wider range of class times, exposure to different grappling styles, more experienced teammates, and the option to train in both gi and no-gi formats—giving you the chance to explore what suits you best. Depends on your target audience. You won't get a lot of kids signed up to a gym with killer in the name. Which might be exactly what you want, even though it will be a lot harder to pay the bills. If you are only teaching BJJ, I'd stick with calling it Grappling or Jiu Jitsu over Combat. That sounds much more MMA to me. I wouldn't use your last name, unless it's Gracie. The standard is just the town or area with the art or style. It lets people know what they are getting. I don't think many Jiu Jitsu techniques have been picked up for regular use in wrestling - just on occasion is all I mean. I posted the other day, a small clip of Austin DeSanto, hitting a Kimura (for example) after a crazy cartwheel entry into stocks/crucifix. I think the flow of info between Jiu Jutsu and wrestling is quite assymetric. Lot's of wrestling coming into BJJ.. less so the other way around. But more wrestlers are dabbling in BJJ now - which is awesome for the Jiu Jitsu landscape. When i spent a few months there, unlimited including John's was only 210 iirc. It may have gone up, but I went to John's classes twice a day everyday minus weekend bc there wasn't 2 a day. Definitely not invite only. Would be funny to see college dudes come in thinking it was a run of the mill gym and me explaining to them that some of the folks around were literally the best in the world source, 2024 ↗
