You are at a great school. One of my current training partners started there. You just need to be patient. I trained MT and Boxing for almost 10 years before my infatuation with jiu jitsu started. While i can't speak for everyone, striking was MUCH easier for me to grasp and i consider the strategy component more linear with fewer overall paths to understand. For me, everything started clicking around the 6 month mark. Up until then, I felt embarrassed when I had to go with a really good person. That is all just ego.
