Valente Bros are definitely an odd branch of bjj. Their gi sleeves are way shorter and they do punches and kicks as part of their curriculum. My first school back in the early 00's was a Gracie Miami affiliate and they drilled it into our heads that we were studying the true original form of Helio Gracie style of bjj and not the watered down stuff every one else was doing at the time. source, 2025 ↗

45 F here, have been getting fit for the first time in my life over the last few years. Had a setback and had to have spine surgery last July and have been coming back slowly. My trainer Louis Jerez is the best; super friendly/chill, really knows his stuff, wants the best for you and helps you get results safely. He's also a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and privately coaches BJJ, which I train with him as well. Hands down the funnest way to exercise imo, and I've been to several other bjj gyms with large classes and I've learned more with him in a few weeks than 6+ months elsewhere. source, 2024 ↗

I don't hate volk vs either of them if they beat Ilia. Hell, if volk takes 8-12 months off that gives time for Ortega or yair to win and recover in time. Plus, Ortega gave Volk fans a bit of a scare (2 scares) with those deep fight ending submission attempts their first time. Yair gives a flashy comeback for the former champ in Volk and Ortega can have the promo of "I was this close to winning the first time." While also allowing volk to fight someone who is more grappler than striker and after 2 bad kos I'd like to see him not get kod a third time and contemplate retirement. source, 2024 ↗

It’s definitely possible, especially having two Spanish speakers in Topuria and Rodriguez fighting in Madrid, but the problem would be if either one were to beat Ilia, they would then face Volk late this year or early in 2025. Rodriguez-Volkanovski II and Ortega-Volkanovski II are fights that will likely end the same way as the first ones. source, 2024 ↗

My first school 20 years ago was a Gracie Miami affiliate run by the Valente Brothers. Pedro was a nice guy but they spoke a lot about how they train and teach the “true” art developed by Helio. They would make a point in saying most Gracie’s had already moved away from Helio’s style and were no longer true Gracie JJ. We did a shit load of self defense training (basically the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Book by Royce and Charles Gracie) and some rolling. My instructor was a purple belt at the time and as soon as I got my blue belt I quit. I got back into bjj 1.5 years ago and looked up my old instr source, 2023 ↗

Saw this. I feel like one of the things I've seen in Jiu Jitsu is how two faced people can be. It happens everywhere, but the way I've seen it happen in the BJJ community is a huge learning for me - the way people can say one thing and then just do the complete opposite. The female gym manager this girl talks about runs an ig page which is supposed to highlight female empowerment and being a strong independent woman. First chance for her to show it off and she fumbles. Same with the other black belts in that gym. One of them is that dude who makes stupid ass reels. The dumb kind where you source, 2023 ↗

>I guess the first thing I noticed is there is absolutely such thing as outdated jiu-jitsu. It wasn't uncommon for my instructor to teach something that I absolutely knew was wrong because of a more modern counter to it. The most flagrant thing I've seen is how hobbyists teach getting to dope mount. If you try the way most are teaching it in SD/Miami(And I'd assume Austin/NYC), you're going to get thrown into a leg lock every single time. Have you ever tried to bring this up? I've had this issue as well. I know if I bring it up it'll be WW3 in the gym. source, 2023 ↗

Hey, the thought has crossed my mind a lot. But, pretty much what you said. I want to finish my career first. source, 2015 ↗
