Has anyone trained in Los Angeles? My gf signed me up for a month of classes at Cobrinha BJJ. Once it’s done, I’d like to know whether or not I should tryout other recommendations. That is only if I didn’t not enjoy my experience there. Much appreciated, thank you! source, 2023 ↗

I’m in LA proper but I have a few friends who train in South Bay. A couple of them train at Golden State BJJ in Torrance. Dane is a Shawn Williams black belt and a great instructor. I’ve visited a couple of times and it’s a very welcoming environment. I have another friend who trains at Cobrinha Redondo Beach and she has nothing but great things to say about her school. I’m sure there are a lot of other options, those are just the two I know of from friends who have had good experiences. I think the Gracie HQ is in South Bay somewhere too but don’t really know much about what it’s like t source, 2022 ↗

Well, I was drugged and raped. I was so angry about it, I ended up joining the best Brazilian jiu jitsu gym in the world because it was the only one that happened to be in walking distance of my Los Angeles apartment. I was kicked out about a year later. I’m actually shocked I wasn’t kicked out sooner. Cobrinha is a great man, but even he has his limits. I still recommend bjj over any striking martial art, because getting hit sucks. And bjj is the most useful martial art positionally for female self defense. source, 2022 ↗

Los Angeles Jiu Jitsu Academy (jiujitsu.la) in Culver City is solid. Taught by Kron’s former head instructor Ricardo. Revolution martial arts is decent. The Coop bjj (thecoopbjj.com) is cool too, but similar open mat style with little instruction so it doesn’t sound like what you’re looking for. I think Cobrinha has an affiliate in redondo that I’ve heard good things about. Never heard of blackhouse. source, 2022 ↗
