What Reddit says about Carlson Gracie JiuJitsu Hot Box MMA

8 verbatim community mentions from r/bjj and city subreddits, unedited, positives and negatives alike.

I train at Carlson Gracie in Melbourne FL and they give you the option to live roll on Day 1 if you want, but recommend you watch for the first class. Live rolling and feeling effective technique will tell you right away if you really want to learn BJJ. Why keep people that don’t really want to learn? source, 2025 ↗

Some hot takes there 😂 While I agree that most boxing gyms, especially the gyms that train professional and amateur fighters, are home to a generally rougher crowd, that's not at all the case with Muay Thai gyms. Over the last decade Melbourne's Muay Thai scene has blown up and is now a home to Melbournians from all walks of life. Many have flourishing female communities. My partner is a competitive Muay Thai fighter. She is also an Aerospace Engineer. She trains with doctors, physiotherapists, waitresses, etc—fantastic women from all sorts of backgrounds. So don't paint too broad a brush. L source, 2025 ↗

Hey mate. I lived in Melbourne for years, and trained at Peter de Beens in St Kilda. Very nice family atmosphere, great jiu jitsu, and a very beginner friendly program. They offer a good balance between No Gi and Gi. No real self defense / Gracie stuff. I started there because I was living in St Kilda and it was very convenient. I stuck around long enough to get my purple belt (4 years ago!) before I moved to the US for work. For the best of the best No-Gi competition focus, go train at Absolute MMA St Kilda. Lachy and his wife are phenomenal and there might even source, 2022 ↗

Due to a large number of beginner posts, we are encouraging people to use the White Belt Wednesday or the Friday Open Mat megathreads to have discussions about getting started, what to expect, and other questions they might have. Here’s some of my favourites to visit in different cities: Melbourne: Absolute MMA (St Kilda & CBD), Immersion Ringwood, Mustang Sports Centre Sydney: myBJJ Westside (Lidcombe), Gracie Jiu Jitsu Sydney, (Sydney Wrestling Academy is on my list for next time) Queensland: Full Metal Jiu Jitsu, Base Gracie Jiu Jitsu Outside of that if you’re going through Perth you’d be crazy to not visit William Dias’ gym, he recently got silver at AJP beating Tommy Langaker (controversially), but regardless has an impressive resume. And if you’re driving between Melbourne and Sydney then feel free to st source, 2022 ↗

Beston Gracie Jiu Jitsu at Cardiff. It's my home academy, as well as u/ELaporno. Some bloke by the name of Jeremy used to train with us too until he moved to Melbourne and became famous ;) Luke is a Blackc Belt under Royce Gracie, and there's a great vibe, good balance of gi and nogi (now with added wrestling) and, as of typing this email, 14 black belts including Luke, plus about 15 brown belts, so there's something for everyone at every training session. source, 2021 ↗

I think BJJ in particular gives us many reasons that we can use to convince ourselves its okay not to keep tearing. Its too hot to train today, its too cold on the mats in the middle of winter and I hate training for 90 minutes and still not being able to feel my toes, I cant get this and never will. There is always a reason not to go train. Just make a commitment to yourself and keep turning up. source, 2016 ↗
