Everyone has already said the essential so I’ll reply with a tangential argument which isn’t entirely thought out: whenever I read about BJJ it seems to be custom-made to an US audience: the marketing, the price, the association with something relatively popular (UFC), the “lifestyle” approach. This reminds me a bit of the vast difference in other sports when comparing Europe to the USA: in the US it seems that paying the incredibly high prices for tickets to the NBA or NFL is perfectly fine since there is a certain “package” that comes with it; in Europe Napoli fans just walked out of the sta source, 2020 ↗

Wrestling is not a martial art. It is a competitive sport, just like BJJ. And BJJ is a fancy variation of Judo, hence an oriental (asian) art. BJJ is not particular popular in Europe. It is actually hard to find a black belt in a range of 100km of my home town. I guess there is none. The only black belt I know is one of my students ... an Aikido student, btw. in case you wondered. Probably my great grandfather. He was a revolutionary during WWI and WWII in Spain, and was targeted by the Nazis for traveling throughout Europe to spread anti-nazi propaganda. He published a few books, one of which was an argument as to how Wrestling and Boxing combined were the two most effective practical ways of man to man combat (at the time - this was before Jiu Jitsu, and other more modern grappling styles). Oss, I've been training more than just a year. I'm still struggling on but I set my target to Master International IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship – Europe Barcelona.
